3587 at Sat. Breakfast Club

Taps: 2. Total: 3587.

BB Chris -- Universal Pass.

1. Both hands, inside grip on his knees.
2. Step back, then forward, knee forward pressure on his thigh.
3. Repeat other side.
4. As soon as he lets go grip on my sleeve, that's the side to do Under/Over Pass.

Re-Watch: Marcelo Half Smash Pass ... keep getting rolled. I'm doing something wrong.
and Giggler Sweep.

Also, tried Danaher 1/2 Pass on Magic Mike and he kept me in Lockdown, and eventually wore me down and swept.

3585 at the Masters 2 Open Mat

Taps: 9. Total: 3585.

Masters Open Mat at Legacy. Masters, i think means 36 and over. Met Prof. Crane at the Shoyoroll Open Mat.

Pros:

  • 8am Sunday, so I can get my training and still have the whole day for family stuff.
  • 5 minutes from my house.
Con: I can't think of any.

Six others besides me today: all Purple, except for one Blue, and two Black. Blue Mike had very good balance. He recovered midway during my favorite Sweep attempt.

Prof Crane -- a whole another level of Black. He's three, four steps ahead me. BB Chris uses pressure and weight distribution. With Prof. Crane, I'm in a maze and he's far ahead just closing all the escape routes.

Hope to make this a regular gig. Simi had an open mat today, too and I love training with those guys. Only downside is that it's 35 minutes away.

Purple Ira tip: taking away the elbow base, pulling up on Side Control top.

Scared to use Hitchhiker ESC on all the armbars that I was caught in. With Prof. Crane, he underhooked my leg, so I couldn't even if i wanted to, but with the others, I gotta just take the leap. And as Nick Diaz says, "Don't be scared, Homie."

Trained 4x this week. Whew. New Personal record.

Working on always keeping ego in check. Everyone always asks, "How much do you weigh? How old are you?" They're trying to be nice, to give me an excuse. No thank you. I'm not going to take the Excuse.

No excuses. I'm as old as I am and I weigh what I weigh. Every roll is an Absolute Division for me. I will not use age or weight as an excuse. I will use BJJ.

3576 and Half Guard Passing

Taps: 7. Total: 3576.

BB Chris ... Half Guard Passes. Lots of details.

1. He's on his side, wins Underhook even.
Pass A: REVERSE SIT:
 a. Flatten him: my left knee against his hip, Walk my right (trapped knee) to the right.
 b. Left hand over his face onto other side, change base (Reverse Sit), Gi grip under his armpit.
 c. Right hand grips far side knee pants grip.
 d. Shrimp back toward his face, pressure with my butt against his shoulder and face and FREE my leg for the Pass and keep the pressure by going almost N/S.

Pass B: KNEE CUT
 a. try to shrimp but he's holding on tight to ankle with his legs, can't get it free, THEN ... change base back other way, get Underhook, Knee Cut.
 b. Pick up his right arm, pull up as I Knee Slide and free my ankle for the Pass and move toward N/S for pressure.

var. to B: if I still can't Free the Ankle ... reach behind with my left hand and grip top knee and pull up a little.

BB Mike tip on getting the gi out for the grip: Instead of fumbling near the waist to pull out the gi, START at the TOP of the gi, slide my hand down til i get near the waist, then it's easy to pull out.

Brown Sub visiting gave me a good tip on Omo prevention, which I desperately needed: he said to go to Combat Base.

Haueter inspiration has got me thinking about using Less Muscle, Less Energy, and more Technique.

3569 and Pop Up Half Guard Top

Taps: 7. Total: 3569.

BB Vince and his Pop Up Half Guard Top.

I. One hand on shoulder, one hand on hip, left foot bases out, right foot (trapped foot) POP UP,  knee on his center belly.
  A. If Bottom leg stays on mat ... STAPLE his bottom leg with my knee going to the mat, Underhook far arm; pick up near arm, Knee Slide down his leg and GO TO NORTH-SOUTH, Side Control is not enough.

 B. If Bottom leg comes off the mat ... get my right elbow inside, RE-DIRECT to the right, get Quarter Mount.
  i. Get Seatbelt immediately. Feed collar to choking hand. Work the 1-2-3 Choke sequence.

 C. If he doesn't react, stays flat ... put both my hands on mat, either side above his head. Re-direct my legs, taking him to the right. Quarter Mount.

2nd Hour - BB Vince and RNC Ankle Lock.

vs. Knee Shield.
 1. go for regular Footlock, and he defends by bringing his foot across to my belly. Same side hand goes under his ankle, other hand gets RNC grip on his foot. Posture up and twist away a little.

vs. DLR.

vs. Double Guard Pull, and He goes for Footlock and brings other foot to brace.
  1. Attack the other foot.

ROLLING NOTES:
a. White belt almost got me with standard Armbar from Guard. Working f'king lapel wraps that I like so much. Stupid me stood up. Almost got caught.

b. got Purple Leif with Zach Choke from Side. Haven't seen him in awhile. He was just rusty. He does love his Loop Chokes, got me twice with it. Lazy me. Didn't respect, didn't defend early enough.

c, Kob Defense tip from Brown Jason - get my near foot UP, connect foot with other thigh (make a triangle), hand protects neck, elbow connects to near knee. Adopt this defensive POSTURE and give them no room to get their Knee on my Belly!

Working on:
1. Bow and Arrow ESC (K. Brown)
2. Armbar Hitchhiker ESC.
3. Turtle Juji Attack.

Brown Wrecking Crew:
1. Ryan
2. Gors
3. Arman
4. Jason
5. Magic Mike
6. Gerald
7. Grossi
8. Izzy

Inspiration: Chris Haueter and the Art of BJJ

Think Street. Train Sport. Practice Art.

And by Art, he means: "How do i CONTROL and SUBMIT my opponent using the LEAST amount of Strength, Speed, Explosiveness. That's the Art. How do I most EFFICIENTLY accomplish this?"

He bases everything on that, whether you have the Art or not?

Words to live by. And practice and train by.

Also, in a nodd to creativity and expression: "In order to stay sane, we tell ourselves STORIES." -- C. Haueter.

3562

Taps: 13. Total: 3562.

BB Vince -- Closed Guard Arm drag to Side Guard and Sweep.
1. Same side sleeve grip, cross grip comes OVER the top of arm, over the elbow/triceps.
2. Move my hips, shrimp out.

var. if he counters with using other hand to frame my shoulder or face -- Arm Drag other way.

3. Stretch/straight my grip on his sleeve, stretch him. Let go, and when he postures up ...
4. Dive under and Pendulum my legs, chop and Sweep.

Troubleshooting with BB Vince. Asked for a refresher.

Knee Shield Pass (from last week)

1. All i remember was to put my Knee up.
2. Depending on whether his Bottom knee is up or not.
 a. Up -- push it over to the right, get my elbow and arm inside, re-direct to the right.
 b. Down -- pressure on top of his legs and Knee Slide down his leg.

Also, re-guard Counter where he brings outside leg in to stop the Pass.
 a. Vince says to weave on other side and hip pressure down for the Pass.

Work on:
1. Re-guard with outside leg.
2. Countering the re-guard
3. Rolling Bow and Arrow (can't remember where the other hand goes).
4. Closed Guard Lapel series ... i keep forgetting to try any of that stuff.
5. Turtle Armbar
6. Hitchhiker ESC for Armbar ... don't be scared homie.

Misc: Starting from the Knees ... I've always sat on my butt bc that's what Marcelo does. He goes for Armdrags or Butterfly from there. But I've recently watched Little Tony P. and he starts from kneeling and gets up to Pass or sit down into Butterfly. Been trying that with modest success.

3549 and World Clan Open Mat - LA

Taps: 13. Total: 3549.

Rolled about 10 or 11 rounds of 5 min. Strict etiquette of not calling out Higher belts. Can only roll with same belt or lower.

In attendance: about 12 Blacks including Kenny from Simi, and Shoyoroll Bear, Sinistro. Also recognized the Routolo Twins from AOJ. About 50 people in all, including kids.

Open mat, techniques, open mat.

Tech 1: Shin to Shin Sit Up Guard with Lapel - he backsteps, pass lapel over to other hand around his waist, hook under his leg for the sweep.

Tech 2: Counter to above - back step, come back to Knee Cut.

Tech 3: Entangled leg, roll over and knock him down with pressure on his knee, into a footlock.

Rolled with mostly Purples, one Blue, one White, one Brown. Also, saw Purple Rick who used to train at my school. Trains with Sinistro now.

Some thoughts after rolling with random Monstrous Purple ... with wicked Closed Guard. Attacking my Right Arm ... if I underhooked, he Omoplata'd. After getting caught twice, I moved my arm to the inside and then got ARM Dragged. Damn.

Need to put that in my game. Defending ... I have a narrow place to put my hand and not get it across his centerline or else get arm dragged and into that whole Side Guard series. Too far forward and get Omoplata'd.

Good rolls.

3536

Taps: 3. Total: 3536.

Just working on GIGGLER HALF SWEEP. Tweaking it. Need to post my left leg against back of elbow to prevent the post or him getting the Underhook. The normal way is to control the sleeve and keep it across my center line, but I just can't seem to do that.

Still managed to pull it off a couple times.

Side ESC -- getting stuck. nothing working and finally able to get Spin Under ESC to work for me. Need to have at least two or three chained escapes routes.

Working on the Mount Maintenance, Cross Choke from Mount. Half Pass. Open Pass. Standing Balance before the Pass.

Lots and lots to work on.

3533 and Brown Belt Misery

Taps: 9. Total: 3533.

BB Chris and Side Guard Armbar.

1. Two on one on the attacking arm, his right. Left hand behind his elbow, right hand cross sleeve grip.
2. Left knee on his hip, behind his elbow. Hip out to the left, dropping his arm to the right to set up Side Guard. Get my left leg high over his shoulder and lock in a High/Side Guard.
3. Right hand reaches for underhook but actually tucks his arm under my armpit, and my right hand reaches under my right thigh to keep his arm trapped.
4. Left hand reaches in front of his face, reaches for behind elbow/triceps of his free arm.
5. If he postures up or can push his face to make room to swing my left leg in front of his face for the Armbar.

BB Vince showing a nice Half Guard Knee Shield Pass series.

*** all starts with not fighting the Shield and getting the Knee UP, to get space to ...

Option 1. Knee Slide: a. control the sleeve grip; b. knee cut and also hip slide, dropping the hip down as I slide.

Option 2: Back Step to other side: push his knee shield to outside, get elbow inside, back step; cross face and make sure to control his far knee/leg with other hand. Get my leg out.

Option 3: Stand up, lift his bottom leg, re-direct to other side, leg drag pass.

Rolled with all the Brown Belts in the house: Ryan, Gors, Stevie G., Jason, Arman.

Finally, "Passed" Steve's Spider Guard for half a second using Lo's Torreando before he reversed me. Progress, I think. And Gors was laying big fat "free cheese" signs in front of my face and stupid me not seeing the Mousetrap time after time.

Til next time ...

3524

Taps: 7. Total: 3524.

Awesome training. First hour: just positional drills, and little movement drills between each round. Brutal. Loved it.

Second hour: all free training. Got five or six rolls in.

Pulled off Closed Guard into Omo Sweep vs Standing guy. Want to transition to X Guard. Need to drill that movement.

Purple Sharm showed me a couple techs.

1. Basic Lasso Guard Sweep. Weave lasso leg over to other side knee that's up. Use other leg on mat to push off and sweep him.

2. Half Sweep with Lapel over back. Get Underhook, pass gi over back to Underhook. Other hand grabs his sleeve gi of near hand. Scoot out, go from knee shield to half butterfly hook. Lift with hook, shoot other leg through and spin out.

Next class: tape up my fingers. They are mangled.

Work; Side Esc and Leite Half - counter Knee Slice.

Sunday, May 1, 2016

Simi Open Mat and 3517

Taps: 16. Total: 3517.

Rolled with 13 people in 5 min rounds. Tapped 16 times.

Need: Berimbolo Defense, Bow and Arrow Choke Defense. Closed Guard, Half Guard. Guard Retention. Spider Pass.

And Omo ESC (Faria) and Arm Triangle ESC.
