Hip Bump Sweep Revisited

Saw a little video clip somewhere ... Hip Bump Sweep done with Cross Collar Grip.

I want to combine that with: Cross Collar Drag, if they counter by pushing me back down.

In looking for the clip that started this whole train of thought, I found this from GGP: he baits with the Cross Collar, controls opposite elbow and sweeps the other way. Niiice.

Recap:

Traditional Hip Bump Sweep 1: reach over and behind elbow

Var. 1: my buddy Webster does it with Cross Sleeve Grip ... and I'm thinking of using it with Sleeve Drag Bait. If Drag works, then work the Side Guard. If they pull back, Hip Bump.

Var. 2: B. Quick shows with a Arm Drag. Underhook/Arm drag grip.

Var 3: Cross Collar Grip (see above). Combine with Collar Drag.

Var. 4: Opposite  elbow grip (see vid) - sweep the other way.

3501 and Spider Guard setup

Taps: 8. Total: 3501.

Brown Steve, who gives me fits with his Spider Guard, taught the class today. And Surprise! Surprise! He was giving away his Spider Guard secrets.

I. Getting there from Closed Guard.
  a. Double sleeve grip, get on side, get knee inside his arm, and flare out knee. Same thing with other leg. So you get to what I call Open Lotus (double sleeve grip, both knees inside his hands, knees flared out).
  b. Left leg on his bicep, straighten my leg. Right leg on his hip, pull on his sleeve and stretch him with my right hand. Get on my right elbow. This is what I call Central Station.

II. From Central Station.
 A. Steering Sweep - Right bicep leg/left hand steers to right (clock-wise); right leg chops down on his knee.
 B. Triangle - tries to break or straighten out of the bicep side, then steer to other side and get my leg with his bicep/grip still attached onto the mat. Right leg posts on the mat to help with it.
    i. he pushes back to center, left leg shoots behind his head, right leg locks in the Triangle.
 C. Omoplata - off failed Steering sweep... go back the other way ... lock in Omoplata but top leg goes over his back, scoot back, get that top leg UNDER HIS CHIN, stretch my legs for the finish.

Try to work this into my game slowly. Meanwhile, still working on the counters ... especially Mendes Spider Guard Pass. Full notes workup to follow.

3493 and Stripe One on Purple

Taps: 6. Total: 3493.

Earned first Stripe on Purple Belt. Almost a year and half since I got the Purple. Honestly, a little anti-climatic. Thought i'd be a lot more excited. Oh well, back to the grind, hopefully this Saturday.

BB Chris.

Side Attack - Baseball Choke from KoB.
 b. He defends, come back to KoB, put that knee on mat like i'm going to Mount, Rollover to other side for Rollover Baseball Choke.

Half Guard Top Attacks ...
 a. Straight Armlock ... he gets underhook, go Reverse Sit, trap his arm, get my elbow on the mat, and his arm is dangling for the armlock.
 b. he defends, bends his arm, puts it on other side of my head, get my elbow down towards his hip, torquing his elbow for Americana-like Sub.

BB Vince.
 I. Half Guard Bottom -- whether he gets Cross face or other side of my head, I need to Underhook his near leg, swing into Deep Half ... link my hands over his thigh, hook under with my outside leg, lift and come up on top.

Drill: Mendes Spider Pass ... Brown Steve still giving my fits.

White -- kept sweeping from Half as I was working Marcelo's Pass. Need to work on my weight distro and pressure.

Closed Guard needs work: I'm getting good Posture Break, but I can't just hang out there. Need to move on ... to High Guard, Side Guard or Werdum Triangle setup. But something, even Hip Bump as they come back up. Can't just hang out there.

Drill the next step!

Last roll with Magic Mike the Brown ... he's got a 10th Planet bias, based on his game. He toyed with me and let me play, then got me with the Truck.

3487

Taps: 4. Total: 3487.

BB Vince.

I. Half Guard -- he lifts near foot, underhook it and pass it over to other side of my head and Take the Back.
  a. Or Sweep him over soon as his other leg is lifted off the mat. Sweep and come up in Leg Drag position.

  b. Top guy has chance to counter, long as he doesn't put up his other leg. Grab under other guy's belt, and roll over right shoulder and take his BACK.

II. Side Attack - w/ Brabo gi grip.
 1. Right hand feeds his gi to my left under his head.
 2. Right hand underhooks far arm, pulls on his elbow and brings my elbow digging into his belly. Heavy elbow pressure.
 3. Either he turns away or I can make him turn by pulling up on the Brabo grip.
 4. Right hand gets collar grip, pushes down and feeds gi to left hand.
 5. Right hand underhooks his leg so he can't roll away.
 6. Bow and Arrow Choke or Hand Behind Head and Hand Choke.

** Can also be done in Half Guard Top.

Rolling notes: Passing - just using two (Bruchecha and Lo Torreada). Pretty good success rate versus Whites and Blues.

Brown Steve ... making inch by inch progress. Especially vs. his Spider Guard. I'm just focusing on breaking his grips. I'm able to get left one off and get my own grip, but in dealing with the other one - he's got a tight sleeve grip and foot on my bicep. As I try to deal with that, he kicks off/breaks my grip and he sweeps or just comes up on top. Spider Grip Breaks. Spider Pass.

Blue Joey -- had the Side Guard and could not get the Flower Sweep. Need to look at it again. Swing my left leg? Nah.

Also, Joey likes to pass my Closed Guard by trapping my wrist and passing it under my butt to his other hand. Hard to counter against strong guys. But I accidentally found a counter -- Omoplata Sweep.

Closed Guard -- 5 Ways to Break Posture

In Closed Guard, my first Priority -- Break Posture.

** most of the moves should be done in conjunction with Leg Crunch (bringing knees to my chest).

1. Elbow flare (pull his elbows out)

2. Swim inside Out.

3. Sit up and Seatbelt grip behind his head and bring him down as I go back down.

4. Double Collar Pull Down and Shimmy my waist.

5. Attempt Hip Bump Sweep ... he pushes you back down.

Also, NEXT:

Getting his arm across CENTER LINE.

That leads to Side Guard, High Guard, and Iron Hook.

3483

Taps: 4. Total: 3483.

Same techs from Tues + drill: Under/Inside Pant Grip/ Shoulder on that side Pressure Pass.

Working on: Breaking Grips before the Pass - thanks to Keenan Vid.

and Back ESC ... Side ESC next and then Mount ESC.

But for now, grip breaks, grip breaks. Deal with that cross collar first.

Getting smashed by all the Browns in the House -- Ryan, Gerald, Jason, Gors, Steveo, Arman. Damn, did i miss anyone?

Was dragging this morning. Did not feel like training. So glad that I went though. As always.

3479

Taps: 7. Total: 3479.

Funny, how I was thinking about Standing Counters and Boom! BB Chris shows that technique.

I. vs Standing -- Logroll Omoplata Sweep.
 a. Cross grip sleeve, other hand underhooks that side leg. Pass grip over to underhook hand.
 b. Open legs, swing out into Omoplata lock. Stretch legs out, gets him low, and LOG ROLL over for the sweep.

II. Can Finish w/ Wrist Lock.

III. Var. other way sweep.
 a. Cross sleeve grip, other hand grips pants at knee.
 b. Swing leg out for Omoplata ... he bases out with his other hand on mat.
 c. Both legs on his back over his head, far leg pressing down on neck, top of his head.
 d. When he postures up, and pushes back up ... Roll over to right and take him over for the Sweep.

IV. Mount Maintenance.
 1. Left hand crossfaces and reaches far armpit. Right hand underhooks left hand at the elbow and spidercrawls up, up.
 2. Cross legs under him.

Bonus tech from Brown Arman: DLR Pass ... strip ankle grip by reaching between his leg and mind, through the gap and pull up on his hand; shin block his other leg, back fall and cross face for the pass.

Brown Chris killed me again. But that tells me I need to review BACK ESC.

Also, the Rodolfo's Baseball choke from Side. Detail I always forget: Killing his arm with my knee.

Little success with Z Pass/Knee Shield Weave Pass ... finally because of the Windshield Wiper at the end to clear trapped Leg. NO CAN STOP WINDSHIELD WIPER!

3472 and 500th Post

7 taps. Total: 3472.

That means I've gone to almost 500 training sessions.

BB Chris -- I. Scissor Sweep Set up to Triangle - (Drac vid for ref.). and if he stands, underhook foot and go for Armbar.

II. Wrong way Triangle.

Purple Nightmare Pierre -- i can break his Posture but can't do anything from there. He keeps getting it and and i'm using too much strength, then the breaks my Guard and Passes.

Brown Steve and his Spider Grips ... making progress, little by little. One of these days, i'm gonna Pass.

Brown Magic Mike -- was showing Pierre how to Counter the Overhook in top Closed Guard ... put your head Under the other guy's chin, drive forward with all your weight and keep him flattened.

Brown Nighttime Eddie - first time i've seen him because he usually comes in at nights. Kicked my ass ... Loop chokes, Footlocks, Knee Bars.

I'm a total White Belt in Footlocks and Knee Bars. I've got nearly no Defense for them.

Speaking of which, BB Chris was saying Don't Stay Back on Half Guard Top, don't give space. That will give room for Knee Bars. He'll swing leg over to other side for the Knee Bar.
