Taps: 416

Taps: 5. Total: 416.

Techs. Seated Guard series and a Sweep.
Sweep:
1. Cross grip with left hand, right hand goes behind his ankle.
2. Left leg replaces my right leg on his left hip.
3. Right leg comes under and reaps his left leg for the sweep.

Review:
Deep Half Counter/choke. Almost got it, but realized my right hand didn't grip his pants leg so I didn't have control for the finish. And I didn't lean back, instead got turned over forward.

Nice Words, Nice boost

Taps: 3. Total: 411.

Sometimes, I need a class like this to keep me going. Damn good good rolling, even though I'm defending most of the time.

Tech. - Review of the Omoplata Attack series, with one new add on.
Var. 1 - If he sits up a little, then get perpendicular, figure 4 my leg and get foot under his chin, scoot back and stretch out and pressure his shoulder for the tap.

Need to Review: Half Guard Bottom.

Rolling Notes:

Got some nice words from Big Bad White Dem, who's 6'3 or 4 and must have about 100 or so pounds on me. Even though he's a White Belt, he's tapped me a few times. A lot of guys are afraid to roll with him because he's big and strong and he looks very scary. In reality, he's a super nice guy. After our roll, he said he likes rolling with me because "you don't look very tough but you are." And that I "roll very differently than others."

Brown Vince then said to him that I don't tap and I said I tap all the time, but he amended to that I "don't quit", is what the really meant. And I'm on a cloud of good feelings.

I try to face my fears and roll with everyone that I'm scared of, and that if I can survive Big Bad Dem, then I can survive most anything or anyone.

One other "aha" moment: I've heard to chaining attacks, and flowing from one move to the next, but I just realized that I need to do that for my defenses. I need to chain my defenses. Instead of escaping one attack, then let them settle into next position/attack, I need to be countering the next attack quicker.

Back to Basics

Taps: 3. Total: 411.

Techs. -- good ole Armbar from Guard and Omoplata if he pulls that arm out.
I never get tired of the basics.

Review:
1. Body Triangle Escape (from the Gracie Breakdowns, relevant parts starts at 5:30.)
2. Ezekiel Choke Defense here.
3. Upa Escape details - point knee outwards, stick elbows, here, and here and here. (put my ear opposite way I'm going to reverse him).
4. Getting stuck after the Guard Break. What do I do next? Here's two good Guard Breaks and I noticed I've been putting wrong knee up. Break 1 and Break 2, very similar. Then the Rolles Standing break with the continuation pass options, here, and just for good measure a Pass to counter Scissor Sweep, here.

5. Warm up drills, here.

Am I on a Plateau?

Taps: 5. Total: 408.

Or does it just seem like it?

Techs -- Seated Guard series.
1. Get collar grip, super super important.
2. Break grips, use my hand blade and sit back.
3. Snap down.

Omoplata - leg over his head, get upside down for the momentum and come back with left leg under his armpit for the sub.

** if he rolls, sit on his chest and come around on by his head and omo on that side.

Spazzy Blue Transformed

I don't know the guy's name because I'm terrible with names, but I think we got our Blues at about the same time. He's a little bigger and has about 20-30 lbs. on me and when we rolled a few weeks ago, he was very aggressive and muscled a lot and though I held him off, he eventually muscled a sub.

Not surprising that he did the same to the other Blues that I talked to. So I'm puzzled about what changed him because recently he's been going slower and trying to be more technical and I've been getting the upper hand on him and getting him top sub position but just not being able to finish him several times. I don't know if he's giving it to me or if he's really trying. And he's even giving me tips to finish him.

I don't know if he just figured it out to go slowly and with technique or if someone said something to him. Either way he's rolling much better and mindful of his rolling partners.

They say you either learn to roll technically or you quit. I'm glad he made the right choice.

Go-To Knee on Belly Escapes

When I'm stuck under Knee on Belly, these are the techniques I try.

The only problem is that at my school, they must of taught Switching Knees one class that I wasn't there, because that's what all the higher belts do as soon as I try anything. They switch from one knee on belly to the other knee on my belly. Very annoying.

Tough Whites

Taps: 3. Total: 403.

Brown Mike taught.

1. Ezchiel from Guard and half and mount.

2. Sweep from Half Guard.

Man, all the Whites are so tough now. And I have no excuses. They are just good and tough. Half my taps are to Whites these days.

Review:
Deep Half Counters
Guard Passes
Half Guard Sweeps

400 Taps

Taps: 1. Total: 400.

Techs - Brown Vince showed a Wedge Knee Half Pass and Open Pass with down the center. Pass defending on how they defend.

Kinda fishing for Subs too much. Need to work on my positions. Position. Position. Position.

**Loop Choke -- couldn't finish. Need to review (Robson and Rener's).

  • Deep Half Counters
  • Half Guard Sweeps.
  • Mount - top
  • Belly down armbar escape (scully video)
  • of course, Side Escapes.

This is my latest Side Escape strategy: let them get Knee on Belly, then sweep or fail and they usually end up taking my Back.

A. 1. Left hand over chin, get collar grip.
2. Get over to other side, pulling that grip, get to Bow and Arrow choke.
** Get grip on knee & left leg over his shoulder makes choke tight.

B. Same set up - can go under his arm and behind his head for the turnover into Side Control.

C. Get up and one hook in.
1. Get pant grip and roll over my shoulder, taking him over into the Bow and Arrow.

So need to review:

Toronto Visit

Taps: 3. Total: 397.

School Visit 1 (2009) - San Diego. Visited/Trained in Leticia's class.

School Visit 2 (April, 2012) - Toronto (Revolution MMA). Matt S. was covering a class.

I think it was a White Belts class. Besides me, there was three others (all Whites). That didn't stop me from tappin. Although they all seemed to be submission hunting.

Must make better effort to get to Closed Guard.
