Back Esc - Kurt O

vid trt 4:35

1. Protect neck, bridge up, pick a side, wiggle n get my back to Mat

2. Look at him, far hand reaches his top leg that is coming over to mount, punch with that grip and spin, turn into Guard. Or push n scoot for Half or Open Guard.

Older vid, escape from back control, trt 3:54
 * knee up, pushes hook off, and sits on it, bottom hand reaches up for pants grip, scoots away, punches up n comes up in Side.

Side Control Esc 17.10

1. Different Path ... Octopus-like under, then hip control with far arm - works half the time.

2. Knight Side Esc vid
Tech a. Traditional, cross faced n smashed - near wrist checks his hip, far arm snakes under his chin, forearm under his neck, hand frames his shoulder; get on side, near leg flat, bridge with other leg, shrimp back/away then back into him and near knee in to Re-Guard.
Tech b. Prevent cross face - bridge schrimp, far side Underhook, scissor legs n come up to knees, grab his knee/knee pick with both hands to come up on top.
Tech c. Prevent crossface - as he comes over, push on back of his traps to sweep.

3. Knight same vid, Kesa Esc - has Underhook
 i. Sit up, push on biceps or shoulder with both hands, timing it to when he transitions from side to kesa.
ii. Standard kesa headlock w/o Underhook - frame with far arm under his neck, link hands, get on my side, schrimp back, get my leg over his head, if necessary.
Frame Esc 2 - too tight, get on side, schrimp, swing legs up n then back down to get him over.

4. Knight same vid - KoB Esc 1: Shin on bicep sweep, grab wrist n c clamp far leg n, scoot hip under him for sweep.
KoB Esc 2 - leg trap, but also hooks far leg.

5. Power of 2 on 1 - Lyman/Castro vid
 1. Control crossface wrist and he can’t pass on that side
 2. Push his hand between his legs or behind his hip, move my body to re-Guard
 3. Let go with right hand n post it on Mat to sit up to re-Guard or get hook in.
 4. If he hops to other side, turn to other side n 2on1 the other arm, same thing on that side.
Bonus gi Sweep: right hand stuffs his hand between legs, left hand reaches over to back for gi material or belt, and bridge n roll over Sweep

Injury update:
Rolling with Brn Arman and trying to escape an armbar. Tried to Back Roll and swing my legs side to side and that combo movement might have PULLED a muscle between my ribs. Still a little sore. Might have to give it a rest for the weekend.

A new group of Whites. Hope they stick it out. I can only tell them to take a Selfie today, so they can compare it to 6 months from now. If they stick with it, they will see a transformation.

Work:

  • Kesa ESC, Side ESC
  • Closed Guard / Falcon control - overhook and Rnc to sweep.
  • 92 two on one ... i made a discovery: I can use it to Giggler Sweep, Hip Bump and Scissor. Foot on bicep to Triangle and push away to Omoplata? Wow, lots and lots of possibilities here.
  • Octopus Sweep

17.98 Sunday Confessions 4415

Taps: 7. Total: 4415.

Most of the taps to BB Tarca. I cannot pass his guard. Just flailing, floundering. He did show me a Closed Guard Break and Pass using the Belt, pushing down on knee, that he said BB Chris (my instructor) showed him ages ago.

Funny how it all comes around. I go to Open Mat, and is showed a tech passed down from my instructor.

Just when i think i've showed the Lockdown, it comes back and bites me in the ass. And what i've learned is that I can pass a Blue Belt Lockdown, but this morning was all Purple Belt Lockdown and they gave me a hard time.

Back to the Lab to revisit Lockdown Pass. Among lots of other things.

17.97 Saturday Breakfast Club & Annual Renato Seminar 4408

Taps: 1. Total: 4408.

Open mat before Seminar and more rolls post Seminar. The one tap from BB Bek, who i think was frustrated from the previous roll with tough technical Brn and took it out on me on the next roll bc he went pretty hard. I don't mind but it goes to show ya even BB have egos.

  Seminar Notes

I. Warm ups with Standing Elbow strikes, into Double Leg, outside trip.

II. Standing, clinch with left hand into Guillotine, he defends with arm over my shoulder, switch hands.
 a. Right hand shoots under his neck, palm up, connect with the left bicep for RNC grip, left hand on his back. Arch back for finish with Darce. (comes on quick, feels like crank then choke sets in right after).

III. Same tech as Single Leg Counter. And can do from sitting Butterfly Guard.

IV. Mount Control
 a. Grapevine the legs and transition to both legs on his hips / thighs.

V. Mount Choke (basic Cross Choke with wicked details)
 a. Double pull on his collars with both hands to get slack out
 b. first choking hand goes with with closed screwed hand, not open (otherwise he'll grab my open fingers)
 c. get deep grip and elbow bent down on his chest.
 d. Swim other hand wide circle to other side of his head, elbow against side of his head and press back on his head as pressure down with hips, chest.

**VI. Break Posture from Closed Guard
 a. Move side to side, get off centerline, PULL down two on one on back of his shoulder, with a little leg help. Hip out and Omoplata and Side Guard are right there.
 b. Also, get grips in for Cross Choke - for second hand and finish, move to the other side.

VII. ** Closed Guard Armbar - variations on a Classic.
 a. control same side arm, ie with my left hand on his right wrist, make sure wrist is UP.
 b. Right hand his framing/pushing on his right shoulder (I don't want him close, that will kill my armbar)
 c. Left foot on his hip and HIP UP as my Right foot kicks under his armpit, keep my leg straight ... all these motions will extend his arm.
 d. I can swing my left leg over his head if his posture is broken enough, or reach with my right hand on his head to pull down a little to get leg over.

**VIII. Closed Guard Triangle
 a. ie with Left leg bent and behind the head -- need to put my left hand on my left knee to FRAME (keep the structure of Triangle intact: if that knee gets close to my nose, then he escapes and passes).
 b. other hand grabs the left ankle that's behind his head.
 c. My Right leg posts on his hip to keep him away and me scooting back and squared up or to left, NOT to the right, he'll get out!
 d. If he lifts his leg, then hook it with my right leg that was posting on his hip.

* Finish detail: Push his head straight Back/away - not the usual pulling his head down.

**IX. Scissor Bump Sweep
 a. all about opening, connecting the legs and keeping tight.
 b. Setup the same as Classic Scissor Sweep: same side sleeve grip with the left hand, Right hand cross collar grip.
 c. Open legs, left leg outside his knee close, Right leg comes up under his armpit/tight near his hip/butt (keeping foot on the MAT).
 d. Right foot presses against the hip as i come up on the left elbow in a HIP BUMP SWEEP motion for the sweep.

X. Choke from Back / sneaky detail
 a. Seatbelt grip - underhook opens gi as usual but the Choking hand goes INSIDE the gi, hides the choking hand.
 b. then opens gi again Choking hand can grip the collar for the Choke.

XI. Side Attack - Kimura Grip Armbar
 a. Get him on his side, slide right leg under his back, Left leg swings over the head ... practice that motion, then fall back for Armbar.
* Can also do with 2on1 Grip on his sleeve at wrist, instead of Kimura grip.

17.96 Sunday Confessions 4407

Taps: 4. Total: 4407.

Brn Ray tip: My Side Control, esp Kimura grip has to be more pressure and heavy. So frustrating because he's right and that's just one of so many things (Side ESC etc etc) that i need to work on.

Purp Ira getting very tricky with his lapel wraps. Only a week ago, i did the double open mat sessions with him. Much trickier since then.

Still trying to get the 92 to work.

Man, needing this week off. Might have overdone it a bit this week. Rest and recharge til Sat and Sun.

Side ESc, Back Esc, Arm Triangle ESC.

Brn Joon showing some folks the Flying Triangle from Knees:
 1. Guy gets cross collar grip with his right hand; go under that and get same side collar grip with my left hand.
 2. Right hand gets same collar, cross collar grip, a two on one on that collar.
 3. Left knee comes up off the mat, then right foot.
 4. As I'm pulling down with the two-on-one grip, Right leg swings over his left arm and over his head, chops down on the back of his neck, and as i'm falling back down to the mat, Lock in the Triangle and pass his right arm over to my right.

* Done right i should have a soft landing with my shoulders hitting the mat.
** Done wrong: I come down hard, back of my head hitting the mat.

Guess it would be safer to fall forward than backwards.

17.95 Saturday Breakfast Club 4403

Taps: 1. Total: 4403.

Small crowd for a Saturday. Unusual. 2 BB instructors: Joel and Jason, and I was the next highest belt. The only Brown, with 2 Purp, one Blue, 3 Whites and a partridge in a pear tree. How did that happen?

BB Jason ... Closed Guard Sneaky Lapel Choke (i saw it on BJJ ninja). Pass it to the Cross Collar, and grab it with the other hand and get it on other side of his head for the Choke.

BB Joel ... continuing on from his Cross Collar Guard. After the drag/pull down into a Loop Choke Finish.
ie Left hand cross collar, drag / pull him into Turtle, loop choke, right foot hooks that side arm, fall to that side and left leg over his head to push on top of his neck for the Loop Choke Finish.

Work on:
1. Kesa ESC.
2. Aly Lapel Armbar
3. Sky Pass.

17.94 Thurs AM 4402

Taps: 11. Total: 4402.

Roll call: From 4, 5 White Belts on Tues AM to 0 this morning. What happened to all the White Belts. Chris was not suited up but there still were 4 other BB on the mat: Vince, Mike, Mord

And no techniques - straight rolling in the first hour to all Positional Training in the second, with free rolls at the end.

I might have overdone it a bit today: I did a 5 minute Yoga and 100 KB Swings before i came to class. Nothing in my stomach but a cup of Bulletproof Coffee.

So by the time i had freakin Purp Morgan on top of me, who used to be a bodybuilder and now a Purple Belt, on top of me in Kesa, i was dying. I would have puked a few times if there were anything in my stomach. Also, my right thigh was cramping up.

He's got a smashing Side and wicked Kob and Kesa, too. And i tried a few things to escape and he kept countering and I finally TAPPED to the Pressure and one second later, the freakin bell went off.

I realize now I needed to get my Elbow back. He was pulling up on it and nullifying all my ESC attempts. And one ESC i didn't attempt - pushing off his chest/collar grip while i scrimp away.

My BJJ game, i realize is similar to my Chess game and the reason people, especially lower belts, like to roll with me is because i don't go too hard and they feel like they have a chance against me. Same thing in Chess.

BB Vince showing misc Blue Girl ... Flower Sweep from Guard, and if they lift that leg up, Underhook it and continue on with the Sweep.

Retirement Vision -- i just saw what i want to do when i retire in a few years: Train Full time. Travel and Train. i thought about teaching or maybe opening a school, but that's too much. I'd rather just train every day or every other day.

Watch and Drill
1. Sky Pass
2. Back ESC
3. Side ESC
4. Kesa ESC.

92 Guard - making inches of progress. gotta get my foot on hip to keep distance. Hip Up and get on my hip to expose Angle to the Back.

17.93 Tues AM 4391

Taps: 1. Total: 4391.

BB Chris ... I. RDLR Waiter Sweep (rerun)

II. DLR push on armpit to Back Take (rerun).

BB Joel in the house. Taught in the second hour.

Cross Collar Series, with a few different details, variations from what i know.

Var. 1 - Collar Drag - break grips on my knees and legs, then when he reaches in to re-grip, then Drag. BUT he showed a drag straight back (instead to the side) and landing on both my knees.

Var. 2 - When he tries to break Collar Grip with both hands ... Push with it, NOT forward to near shoulder but ACROSS his chest (more power that way), and lead leg on Combat Base comes up on outside of his knee (same side as Collar grip hand), and Knock him over for the Pass into Side and even back step into S Mount.
** On the Push, i usually go for the Knee Tap to get him down.

Funny, I'm a Brown Belt and one of the regulars. I know everyone there, except for new White Belts. But i don't feel like a Badass. I feel like a competent Purple. and I like to roll and roll and roll.

Speaking of White Belts, there were a lot in today. Felt like he was running a Groupon? There were four, and one stayed to the end working with another Brown. He's probably got the best chance of sticking with it. We'll see.

Another White was a Big, Strong Guy. Heavy. If he just sticks it out for 6 to 8 months, he's going to look so much better, not to mention his Jits game, too.

Also, on Octo Half -- come up on my ELBOW!

17.92 Sunday Open, Part 2 - Old Man Open Mat, 4390 - Second NAP!

Taps: 10. Total: 4390.

40 and Over Open Mat. Went from 1pm-4pm. i think i rolled for a couple of hours, at least.

Got three rolls in with BB Chris, the host. Not as many as last time - about 9 total, with 7 at the most on the mat, with people leaving early and couple showing up late.

Three very heavy Purples and also, big Ira showed up, too. I rolled with him last this morning at the Confessions. He got to train double because it was his birthday.

Later, another big Purple showed up. Very technical, and he had a wicked Half Guard game, a lot i recognize from my game but he had tricky stuff, too.

I asked about his Go-To Half Guard Pass -- lapel control on undertook side, reverse Sit, near knee against the guy's hip and get leg out or turn to Far Side.

Blue i met at JJ in the Park (Maibu) about a year ago was there. Loves arm bars, gave me a tip, which was X Bar (bottom leg curls behind the head, top leg over the top.)

Small Purp who came late, 130lbs … had me in Arm Triangle - couldn't finish. Tried it again later in the round and i reacted too late and did not tap … SNOOZE and OUT. Seemed like i was out for a long time and spasms when i came, too just like the first time.

He had a really good Knee Cut and he finished it on Far Side, if he couldn't get his leg out.

Pleasant dream. Wish i could remember it.

17.91 Sunday Open Mat, Part 1 - Sunday Confessions 4380

Taps: 7. Total: 4380.

Sunday Confessions, Masters 2 (36 and over).

Funny, strange. Second roll, i'm rolling with this beefy Brown, no stripes, just like me and i knew he was going to go hard with ego and all. whatev. he's got me in Side Control and he's stalling in N/S and someone is saying something to him and he gets off me and LEAVES??!!

Turns our BB Tarca told him it was Masters 2 Open Mat and he was welcome to roll today but implied that he was too young and couldn't come again. Tarca felt bad. Not sure who invited him.

Speaking of Tarca, he was showing nogi girl lulu (not sure what belt she's got) the Ankle Lock Counter to Straight Footlock … can do to either leg, same side arm scoops under the ankle, other hand comes over top of the ankle like the Silverado Break for Armbar.

Purple Ira just killed my Octopus, as did BB Steve. Other Purp, big guy, killed my Knee Cut because he had a grip on my leg/pants. Must remember Ira tip to get my elbow down to mat for Armbar Esc or to get it safe.

17.90 Saturday Breakfast Club 4373

Taps: 0. Total: 4373.

II. Review... KoB Armbar when he reaches under ankle.

Gave tips to Blue Eddie ... S Mount to Armbar and Blue Asian Paul ... Silverado Armbar break.

Failed on cross grip swing sweep, and 93 sequence ... need to review, along with Closed Guard, High Guard, Side Guard, airplane hip bump.

Failed bow n arrow .. keep elbow down n tight.

17.89 Sunday Confessions 4373

Taps: 0. Total: 4373.

Was in attack mode or good defense mode.

Although a couple of guys had good Closed Guard and easily got my right arm across center line and into Side Guard. They were too slow so I was able to square back up.

Work on:

93 to back or Triangle
Cross grip bump or swing leg over
Side attacks - Milton arm bar and Side to crucifix
