17.43 Sunday Confessions 4087

Taps: 2. Total: 4087

Now that i'm getting to Top and attacking positions, some people are getting Super Defensive and i'm not able to get any attacks going. All their elbows are in, protecting their neck, etc.

What to do, what to do? Only thing i can think of is to apply some Pressure to open up some attacks.

Watching BB Tarca or rolling with him i always pick up a thing or two:
 1. from KoB, if the guy puts knee up to prevent Mount, weave that leg and fall back into Foot Lock.
 2. when he was rolling with BB Crane, i saw prof Crane defend the Straight Footlock by turning his foot into him, that angle might have been enough.
 3. Easy DLR Pass. Or he makes it so easy. a. Stuff non Dlr leg. b. Push down Dlr, and X Pass.
 4. When i rolled with him, he had me in Closed Guard and kept going to Armbar / Wristlock and as I defended and leaned into him, he reached for the leg and already had my wrist control and easily Flower Swept me, THREE TIMES. So effortless.

Need to work that into my game.

17.42 Saturday Breakfast Club 4085

Taps: 3. Total: 4085

BB Chris ... Stack Pass to Armbar if he frames his arm on by hip to prevent Pass.

II. Close Guard to Lasso and lose both sleeve grips ... DLR
 a. Sit up Guard, pass Lapel under his leg
 b. S Mount Wiper Legs, come up to Single Leg
 c. Circular Takedown

Pet Peeves 1 and 2.
 a. Making excuses.
 b. Fishing for compliments. Just a sign of weakness and insecurity. as is making excuses.

Got the juji roll to Spider Web three times. Could not get the Armbar Break and finish. Need to work on that. Happy i was able to get to Spider Web. Was pulling with strength and decided to abandon the Armbar all three times.

Brn Ryan has tight set up and finish to Bow and Arrow. Keeping that leg over the shoulder and connected to the choking hand, that takes any space for his head to pop out and escape.

17.41 Sunday Confession 4082

Taps: 4. Total: 4082.

So this newcomer Brown asks to roll as I'm warming up. First roll of the morning... he says warm up, light roll. What does he do? Footlock, I tap. Jumping Triangle, I defend but still stuck, he tries Armbar, then quietly switches to wristlock. I tap. He tries to knee cut against my Half Guard and grinds and grinds his forehead against my chin to get the Pass, then later Heel hook. I tap.

Nothing against footlocks, wristlocks, flying Triangles and grinding into my face, but it's not a light warmup roll. Just saying.

Rant over.

Blue was showing someone else a nice Turtle attack to Armbar: reach across to Underhook far arm, get leg over and hooked, Underhook hand cups the knee and roll over to the side and he rolls also, right into Armbar position. Slick.

Didn't have much luck with Leite's Back Take. Did better with Vince's Wiper Back Take and just realized I didn't do the hook stretch.

17.40 Saturday Breakfast Club 4078

Taps: 1. Total: 4078

BB Chris ...
I. Pummel drills to Arm Drag
II. Seoi Throw ... my seois suck. Needs a lot of work and reps. Lucky I was partnered up with BB Martin, the heaviest guy there. A big, heavy guy like him will expose all my technical flaws.
III. RDLR intro
 a. Pants grip rather than ankle and inside leg on bottom, outside leg of top, squeezing tight on his knee;
 b. My right hand gets cross collar grip, pull and break posture and if he strips hat grip, switch to knee grip on outside.
I don't think I was pinching my knees enough.

Brn Tobias ... haven't rolled with him in a while. He seemed to think I've made progress.  Hit the Giggler Sweep on him (hope every time someone hits it Sean R. gets a notification and a buck). But Tobias Side Pressure was damn heavy. I know out-weighs me by 50-75 lbs but that wasn't it. His pressure very focused and precise ... right on my hip and chest.

Speaking of pressure. Only tap today was to BB Chris. Last couple rolls with him, he was going easy and with no pressure. Today he went easy on me but with pressure. Man, I've forgotten I heavy his top pressure is. Sheesh!

Hard to stay Humble

Brn Arman keeps asking me if i'm going to compete. Keeps building me up. and others always talk me up and i have to remember to not let it get to me. not get a big head. but it's hard. not that my skills are that great or my techniques are so pure.

if anything, i do thing bjj has made me mentally tougher. i told quit easily. i do tap, but not easily.

stay humble, i tell myself.

Wise words from Rabbi Black Belt

He's 62, and has had a heart attack at Blue Belt and lots of injuries including a spine injury.

Listening to half of his podcast with S. Kesting, I got two takeaways.

1. Don't compare yourself to others, only yourself. Is your BJJ better than it was yesterday?

2. Be safe and survive so you can train again tomorrow.

17.39 Thur Am 4077

Taps: 6. Total: 4077.

Roll call: 5 Black, 7 Browns ... over the course of the two hours.

BB Chris ... Basic Butterfly Sweep. Sweep B going the other way if he puts his leg up to stop the first sweep. He'll usually try for Underhook on the other side, then i underhook the raised leg and sweep him other direction.

BB Vince ... DLR Pass from Knees.
 1. Basic DLR setup, my right knee is up and he's got his DLR hook there; other leg on my left hip.
 2. His left hand has my ankle, his right hand has sleeve grip on either of my hand.
 3. His Non-Dlr on my hip and his grip on left hand are very important: if he has my left hand, use my right to strip that grip, and i can even leave my right there so he can grip that.
  a. use my left hand to stuff his leg between my legs (need my left hand free so if he gets that leg out, stuff it again.
 4. My left hand goes under and grips pants grip on his Dlr leg; angle to the right and extend my right leg to put pressure on his Dlr hook; that will make him sit up and he'll release the hook or give space to get my right leg out and spin with my left hand to the left for Leg Drag to the right.
 a. if he holds on to my ankle, then undhook his leg and Pass to the left.

Six taps: 5 of those were at the end, all to Brn Jason. He is slow and technical and he never goes easy on me. His tip: I was pausing at Dogfight position -- get my right leg out and circle behind to the left and he'll tip over. I can't waiting for him to press back and for the Roll Under.

Making of a Samurai Sword and BJJ

1. They heat the metal and fold it over and over to get the impurities out.
2. Hammer and pound it. Repeat hundreds of times.
3. Sharpen and polish and polish.

And i've been thinking it's not unlike the journey of BJJ. All those times getting smashed, it's just the road to getting rid of my impurities and getting tougher and sharper.

Just another way of saying, "Paying my dues"?

17.38 Tues Am and The Ego Rises 4071

Tap: 6. Total: 4071.

BB Mike ... Closed Guard ... Overhook and he circles to get his arm out.
 1. Left hand and elbow follows it out, right hand grips his wrist.
 2. Left hand pulls in the elbow to get space to underhook it with my right hand.
 3. Shrimp and Armdrag, get his elbow on the mat, reach over him and trap, as i'm in Side Guard.
 4. Climb up, take the Back.

BB Vince ... Turtle Series.
 I. Bottom: my near foot on his hip and wait.
II. Bottom 2: my near foot between his and when he transitions, use that to hook and roll.

III. Top ... my near knee staples his near leg
 1. Get collar on other side, over him, push him forward to get space to put my other leg in front of my first leg.
 2. First leg hooks far leg and both hooks stretch and flatten him out.
 3. He comes up, then get both hooks in for regular Back Take.

var. Get the hooks in and pull him over to the side of second hook and i'm sitting down Back Take.

The Ego.
At the end of class, at the end of all the rolls. There was just a new guy to our club. A Purple Belt. A competition Purple. I've seen him once before. We were the only ones left that still wanted to roll. We rolled and he tapped me, and i really don't mind tapping, but.
He wasn't done. He wanted to roll more. So we did. And we rolled a couple of more times. He ended of tapping me once more. But my Ego was playing Cardio Chicken. Who's going to blink first? Who's going to quit first? Not me!
I was not used to this. Most guys would have gassed out by now. Not this guy. I was little annoyed.
Eventually, we mutually called it a day.
But i saw my Ego peaking out from his hiding place. It's been awhile. Usually, when i have a sucky training or class, it's because of Ego. Because Ego sets up Expectations. That's when I'm unhappy.

The long rolls reminded me of when I used to roll and roll endlessly with Webb. Long, epic rolls. But with a difference because then there was no Ego. Just joy and addiction to rolling. And he always got the best of me, but it took him a long, long time.

And at the end, this Purp asked me how much i weighed. i told him. why? who cares? i did not ask how much he weighed. prob had me by about 20-30 lbs, but 80% of people i roll with are bigger and stronger. that's the way i like it. i don't want any excuses for myself.

17.37 Easter Sunday Confession 4065

Taps: 1. Total: 4065

Only tap from the four Stripe Blue that i've never seen before. An Ezekiel from Half Guard top. Because he got the crossface. He tried it a few more times, and even a D'Arce. No go. I tried Loop Choke a couple times. Could not finish.

Wrestler White Seb almost got me again with a Straight Armlock. Gotta remember he likes isolating that arm. He also killed my Deep Half by getting the Underhook.

Practicing my X guard with Old Alan, but he kept getting low and sitting down. Only got one sweep out of three attempts.

1. Armbar ESC tip from Purp Ira -- if there's room, get that elbow down on the mat. Suck it down there.

2. BB Tarca ... Closed Guard grip break if he's got grip on chest: both hands on it and pull up and away the center line, straight into Side, High Guard and into an Armbar. He made it look so easy.

3. BB Tarca again ... Knee in Belly Half Guard Pass: Pull in with the Cross Collar and the same side Sleeve grip as i put pressure with the knee in the middle. (I always thought it was pushing with the cross collar to threaten choke). He has to turn in or away, then take the Back.

17.36 Saturday Breakfast Club 4064

Taps: 4. Total: 4064.

BB Chris... Passing Lockdown
 1. Inside Double biceps control, my shoulder in center, head to side of Lockdown
 2. Get lower down his body, hug his legs and sprawl to break Lockdown to move low around to pass.

Purp Shaun killed my Octopus... letting him get his hips too close to my head and forgetting to come up on my elbows and try to get Outside leg into hook.

Progress: I actually was on Top position briefly against guys i've never done that to. I'm usually on bottom, defending a 100% of the time. But today, there was a couple rolls where i was briefly on top, before i was reversed, but but ... the roll was me defending, surviving, 85% of the time, not 100. PROGRESS.

And last week,  i was showing my Falling Scissor Sweep to a White belt and Brn Pierre was watching and he said to me after of roll that he's been using it and getting good results with it. Ha. How awesome is that? My patented move is spreading.

Work/drill: Ghost Side ESP movement ... bridge into him to create space for the spin.

Also, Roger sneaky mount ... Brown Wolfie killed it by lifting his knee and connecting to elbow and I didn't have any space to get my knee up on his belly.

And Ninja Mount Entries:

and sneaky one:

17.34 Saturday Breakfast Club 4059

Taps: 1. Total: 4059.

BB Chris ... Bomba Closed Guard Pass ... move to side, trap wrist under him, pass it to other hand, stay heavy and push knee down to open Guard and windshield to prevent getting stuck in Half Guard.
Pass to Side, crossface and come in front of his face to Papper Cutter.
  B. To N/S Choke.

"Your Brownness is coming out."  -- BB Joel. Very nice and encouraging words from a BB.

Side top ... kill near arm ... go to Roger sneaky mount or Dom Triangle.

I keep coming back to roll with BB Stevo who Vlogs and I think maybe today, then nope not today, but I keep coming back because as BB Rabbi says goal is to train another day.

17.33 Thur Am Club 4058

Taps: 4. Total: 4058.

BB Vince ... started class with Flow Rolls ... with about 6 different people. Nice. Need to flow roll more.

I. Butterfly Guard Passes
 a. get his knees together, pointing up, get my elbow on the outside, push his knees to Left, put my chest on top, wiper/staple his feet with left foot to pass to right ... Pass to the Back.
OR Push his knees to the right, chest on top, wiper/staple with my right to pass to Left ... Pass to Side Control.
*control is top leg, if he turns into me, step over in Mount.

II. Side or Side Reverse Kesa to Mount -- Don't take big step, instead lead with Knee, Kob then Mount. (same thing in reverse to Dismount).

III. Continuation from above Pass into Side ... KoB
 a. he will either, push on my knee or go for Underhook around the waist
   i. put KoB on the mat, other leg steps over his head ... Kimura.

IV. Half Guard Top ... Kimura
 a. he comes up, gets Underhook and on his side, my left hand comes over the top, get outside Reverse Half, and get him flattened.
 b. get my left knee out and near his head for base, then step over for Kimura.

Vince's Arm Triangle tips for me only bc i couldn't finish Brn Freddy: a. if he turns away, get RNC grip and heavy chest pressure; b. if he stays flat, grab my elbows and chest pressure into him.
I thought i didn't sprawl and had my butt too high. Didn't put any chest pressure, only head pressure under his arm.

Should of asked about Counter to Knee Cut. Getting killed except for when i'm not. Especially when they sit back. I need to come up to them and get my Underhook, not just lay there and hide my bottom hand.

17.32 Tue AM Club 4054

Taps: 1. Total: 4054.

stats: 143 lbs, 11.2 / both personal bests.

BB Chris ... Butterfly Series. Double Unders and lift. Get gi over the back, trap and elbow and sweep.

II. Transition to Brabo Choke, use the seem for the second hand.

III. Side to Triangle ... Row boat.
 1. Kill the near arm, my right hand presses his top hand against his belly.
 2. Swivel my back foot against him, lift his head by the side of his cheek/neck, swing my right foot over his trapped top hand and grab my ankle with my left hand.
 3. My left hand is pressed against the side of his head, press on his shoulder with my right hand, lean towards his foot and get my left leg out and lock in the Triangle and lean back into Yoga Boat pose.

2nd hour was all Seoi Drills ... loved it. 25 entries, 25 lifts, 20 finishes. Must remember my own set ups: 1. Snapdown either with double sleeve/collar or Wrestler's back of head; 2. Push and pull back.

Half Passes ... finfou.
KoB esc and Side ESC.
Closed Guard attacks.

17.31 Sunday Masters 4053

Taps: 2. Total: 4053.

2 Half Passes I saw from afar.

1: BB Tarca ... basic knee cut with deep four-finger in choke grip and control other sleeve,, get knee up onto his belly ... if he turns into the knee cut, then my other hand goes  on other side of his head for Choke; if he turns away, take his back and switch to Bow and Arrow Choke.

2. Purp Wrestler Shane ... with Gift Wrap ... the top arm, chest pressure on the other arm, get knee up, almost out, direct to the right (non-knee cut side), left leg steps/loops over his head, slides down for the pass.

Curly stoic Brown ... spent 4 minutes establishing N/S and the trying for Baseball Choke ... no dice.

BB Jim spent nearly the entire 6 min round trying to get the Armbar Break, finally got it with 10 seconds left when he released one leg from over my head and I thought he was transitioning to a Triangle but went back to Armbar.

Giggler variation, blue to omo, lasso or dlr or rdlr.

17.30 Sat Breakfast Club 4051 still

Taps: 0. Total: 4051.

Stats. 143 lbs, fat: 11.6%. Both personal bests.

BB Chris ... Tech I ... Standup Guard Pull to Simple Sweep.
 1. Sleeve and collar grip, same side i.e. Left hand sleeve ...so left leg on his hip as I pull Guard (prevents him grabbing my foot).
2. He's still standing, both my feet on his hips, left hand grabs ankle, right foot pushes on hip, left foot hooks and push pull Sweep.

Tech II ... Turtle turnover to Side Control.
 1. Right hand over his back and grip his near gi, one closest to me.
 2. Pull gi as I walk towards his head creating ankle to effortlessly turn him over into Side.

Keep drilling: Cross Sleeve Hip Bump ... tried twice, got it once; Berimbolo.

Review: Octopus Half Back Take ... need to lift his leg up and get my right knee/leg out by shrimping out; Finfou's Half Pass .. kept getting swept to to right, missing something.

No taps!!!??? People are going too easy on me, being nice. Need to go elsewhere for my taps!

At the end, giving Blue Eddie all my SECRETS ... started with my Half Guard (95% Leite, 5% K. Brown) ... 1. Underhook, 2. Get on side, 3. Outside hook, 4. Near hand ... prevent crossface or hide under my hip.
Options: 1. Shuck and come out Back Take; 2. Knee tap pushover sweep; 3. Can't get knee tap or he pushes back - Roll under Sweep the other way (this is good vs. Whizzard, too).

And i showed him more of my Next Level/Different Game BJJ concepts ... kind of like Hidden/Invisible BJJ, but not exactly.

Getting Underhook from Flattened Half ... 1. Head Push Bridge; 2. Giggler Sweep. A whole nother game because they don't know that's the microbattle (battle of Underfoot that you are fighting).

From Side Control Top ... killing the near arm: 1. regular brute pull the arm; 2. Kesa; 3. my hips to turn him on his side, that lifts his elbow off the mat to get my knee under and to kill his arm.

Eddie asked what i like to to from there ... DomBell's Triangle ... Kob and if he tries to push knee away, control wrist, swing my leg over and fall back down and lock in the Triangle.

BB Chris was watching and showed a more efficient Triangle ... falling down halfway, locking it in, keeping hand on my ankle.

Lastly, i showed him my Falling Scissor Sweep ... which he was impressed with. Just a different way of thinking about BJJ and not just techniques but about how to make it work, exploring and making it my own.
