Taps: 573 / Armbar series

Taps: 2. Total: 573.

Armbar Series - finishing from Top.
1. Fishing for bottom hand and wrist lock to break the grip.
2. ESC - grabbing his leg, when he switches to other grip...Hitch Hike roll out.
3. Counter to Stack - Roll under and sushi roll back to armbar.

** So now I know 3 ESC to Armbar from Mount.
1. Saulo's
2. Chris L.'s stuffing leg into Half.
3. Get my head out, Hitchhiker.

Tech 1 from Black Chris.
* Half Guard Top, Knee cutter to back step to Guillotine. (Key: square hip to finish, and hip up).

Tech 2 - Brown Vince - Half Top Knee Cut to Back Take.
1. Both hands on mat, Right Knee, knee cutter goes other way, on his hip.
2. Right leg is still quarter trapped, left leg back of his head. He should bring his hands up to defend choke, then my right hand grabs sleeve grip.
3. Left hand grabs back of neck collar, lift left leg up, right leg up, sit down and it's a Slick Back Take.

Side ESC - armpit push.
Kesa Esc - armpit, shrimp and come up on knees as he turns into regular Side.

Also, there's a James Foster's Side Esc i should look at again. Gotta try it.

Jordan's Kesa Esc.

Taps: 571

Taps: 6. Total: 571.

Tech. - Back Attack Series.
T1 - Basic Collar Choke.
T2 - Ezchiel from Back.
T3 - Modified Bow and Arrow, using my own gi tail.
T4 - If he bridges into me, and puts weight on me - remove hooks, get under his legs, stretch him out and both sit up and get hooks back in.

Purple John tips for Side Control:
Tip 1:  If he has collar grip, trap that arm, push his face and bridge to roll him.
T2:. push on his elbow.
T3: Armbar Esc - I've been shown this before, and I never try it, maybe because I've never drilled it. Must put on my drill list.

a. Right hand grabs my gi at chest to protect.
b. Left hand grabs behind my right elbow, making sure to cover my right hand (to hide from wrist lock).
c. Bump up, left hand grabs his leg and put between my legs.
d. Then grab his other leg and put it behind my head.
e. Sit up into Guard.

Also, drill Saulo's ESC from the armbar (from BJJ Uni).

A little bit of success passing, but stuck when I trap his leg and knee. Review Leo Passing Seminar series?

Progress with Turtle Turnover, too.

Taps: 565 / Sat. Private w/ Lil Bro Brown

Taps: 3. Total: 565.

Academy closed this weekend for Thanksgiving, so went to train with Lil Bro Brown.

Tech 1 - Sao Paulo/Saulo Passing style - we spent about 30 min. on this one technique.

Key details:
1. My lead right leg pressuring his leg/thigh.
2. Stuff his lead right leg, under my butt.
3. My right hand has chest gi grip.
4. Two step to left - right step to side, then left and get him on his side, then ...
5. Knee cut with my right knee as i get close, shoulder pressure and i connect my right elbow to right knee (prevents space for his knee to get in).
*5. Knee slide down to clear my leg.
*6. Pick up his right sleeve/arm and push off with my left leg back to the right, pressing with my hip/butt to get his knees turned all the way to other side.
*** as he turns, there's room to get my right knee in for the Pass as he is flattened.

Tech 2 - Turtle Turnover
* he showed me his version, because I tried Jordan's and i couldn't do it because i forgot a couple of details but they're not too different.
1. i'm on the side of turtle, my right hand over his back and grips gi at stomach level, keep tight with elbow on his near hip.
2. left hand grips at his left elbow.
3. switch base with right knee on mat near his near leg, and left leg straight out.
4. pull towards his butt angle and turn him, then keep bring my left close, tucked in against his back.

Tech. 3 - Spinning Baseball Choke from Side.
* i liked the set up.
1. from Side, left hand cross faces, under the head and gets thumb in grip on collar, not tight, but actually pushes up so collar comes up below his chin.
2. Go Knee on belly, and if he pushes knee away, then get second grip, palm up, baseball grip.
3. Left leg goes over his head, get N-S, get my head down on other side of his right hip, and finish.

Taps: 562 / Passing 2.0

Taps: 3. Total: 562.

  • Judo leg reap drills. Kick against the wall.
  • Mount top - he pushes off, go to KoB,  then paper cutter choke or Baseball choke, or Ezchiel or under head choke.
  • Defends that choke - go to armbar.

Focus: Passing.

  • Smash Pass. (Lovato Jr. has cool vids), but the comprehensive one is on JJ Lab. [i had a couple guys grab my lead leg -- DLR? -- do i switch lead legs or make sure I stuff his leg under me?]
  • Scully Opening Closed Guard from Knees.

Taps: 559

Taps: 5. Total: 559.

Tech. - Half Guard Sweep Bottom. Similar to the Kesting one.

My Half Guard Top Checklist:

1. Get Underhook. Go for Tripod Pass.
2. Can't get Underhook. Get elbow under his armpit, go Reverse Half, and Pass that way.
3. He gets Knee up and can't get close, Pop up and do Knee Slide Pass - get my knee up near his arm pit.

Also, Brown Vince gave me good details on the Stand Up Pass that I like to do.
1. Cross grip and push down on the leg on the side that he doesn't have my hooked.
2. Staple that leg to the mat.
3. Other hand swim in under and grab collar for the pass.

554 Taps

Taps: 5. Total: 554.

Tech. - really complicated, half to deep half to x-guard to leg lift to pass.

Tech. 2 - Side Control Maintenance.

Kind of like this Cobrinha drill but if he turns into us, we put our top elbow on the crook of his hip and back step, drop our hip down his head, and come back on the other side of Side Control.

I like both, though.

Still 549 taps

Taps: 0. Total: 549.

I was the highest belt, so i almost tapped a couple of times, but nothing doing.

Black Joel's Sunday fun day.

Tech 1 - Judo takedown, with the inner foot reap.
1. Push with right hand collar.
2. Step in with right foot, cross over with left.
3. Right foot goes between his leg and hook out his outside leg.

Tech. 2. Scissor Sweep.
Love these basic techs. I always pick up a detail or two.
Detail 1: knee across chest.
Detail 2: hip out, create space and pull him toward me -- that will make him light.

Tech. 2: Scissor Sweep var. w/ the two sleeve grips.
1. Pull both sleeves the way I want to sweep.

Also, he taught us to start with this grip set up: 1. Cross collar grip, not too deep, so that the knuckle is against his neck; 2. other hand on his knee to threaten the Rey sweep.

And if he tries a two-hand grip break on the collar grip, grip one sleeve grip, pull and go right into the Scissor Sweep.

Drill update.

Ryan Hall bump triangle - but I'm just focusing on the bump sweep part of it. And a key detail, different than the way I was doing is, he drops his knee to the mat and tight against the other guy's knee to block that side. It's quite effective.

Now I've been into my 1000 solo rep drill of this tech but on my left side, but I noticed a lot of guys were pushing my right knee down and passing to that side. So I should probably drill the bump sweep to that side. So I start my drill count all over, and do that side? Ah man.

Taps: 549

Taps: 4. Total: 549.

Pretty much a two-hour Open Mat. Back to the drawing board on my Back Esc, a little progress on Butterfly Pass (managed to Hop over Purple Chris), and inching along on Half Guard -- manage to prevent cross face but now they keep going Reverse Half on me, and I can't get the Shaolin Sweep to work, and maybe need to review Vince's Tails Sweep.

I think Tavares has a back take from there, maybe.

Review:
1. Back Attack (1000 JJ tech).
2. Reverse Half ESC.

Brown Vince did show me an Armbar set up from Side Control, after I had isolated his near arm, wrap that arm with my left and grab my right bicep (a la RNC grip), then right Knee on belly for pressure, left leg goes over his head, and finish in the regular armbar from Mount.

Also, he showed grips from Closed Guard - start with double sleeves, then depending on how he breaks, switch grips to other four points -- 2 Collar and 2 Knee, but the cross sleeve and collar that's opposite his and getting knee on his hip is quite good, and bonus: he's lead arm is almost across the center line, without any effort or yanking.
