17.111 Wed Am 4461

Taps: 4. Total: 4461.

BB Steve ... Wed for a change of pace and bc free of kids for today.

I. Half Pass Series ... Crossface, gi tail to crossface, reverse sit, scoot back, wedge foot to get other one out.

II. He bumps, go to Mount.

III. Stubborn and can't get leg out, Knee Cut to far side.

92 Hip Bump ... worked on Blue, not on any Browns or BB Steve.

100% ... with hook, which side? and Explore from Half top?
 * same side foot plants and bridge, sweep away from grip / so same side hook.
** from Top: push away, and he comes up, gets Underhook ... i get grips on other side, over the back of his head and under his arm, fall back into Half Guard bottom / outside leg bridges and sweeps.
*** also 200% with RNC grip my bicep, and other grips his lat.

Akins ... Gift Wrap from Mount. and Side from Clingerman FB.

Flavio Canto rolling and guard recovery ... watch a few more times ... inspiring.

17.110 Sunday Confessions 4457

Taps: 3. Total: 4457.

Working on: 92 Two-on-One grip, no luck getting triangle, a little success with Scissor and Hip Bump, and i realized i can also try my Reverse Butterfly with the same grips! Need to try next time.

Working on: Sauer Side ESC ... turn in, outside leg plants and don't get flattened again. then what? watch vid a few more times. also, if he mounts, trap far side trailing leg? to get to Half?

Work on: Back Attacks, getting to back but they are very aware of where my top choking hand is and also trapping my underhook hand. Transition to Armbar?

Loving the Turtle turn with Seatbelt ... Tonon tech ... walk, walk around to underhook side, over his neck and shoulder, and i turn belly up with the seatbelt grips and and he turns over and i take Back.

And also, Quarter Ninja Roll from top.

17.109 Sunday Confessions 4454

Taps: 4. Total: 4454.

"My Game has to Evolve." That was going through my mind as my Half Guard game got handled by two big heavy Purps. Second guy i rolled with before and i did have upper hand but not anymore. His Half Guard passing went up a couple of notches. Very technical, methodical, inch by inch and he got the Crossface and it was all downhill for me. And he worked in some feet fu with wipers, too.

Review: 2on1 Side Esc. and Closed Guard.

92 Double Sleeve ... got a Scissor Sweep, no luck with Triangle, but realized i need to add Hip Bump Sweep to mix if they pull back and away.
recap: 1. to Back; 2. Scissor; 3. Triangle; 4. Hip Bump; maybe 5, Armbar?

Saturday, December 16, 2017

17.108 Sat Breakfast Club 4450

Taps: 3. Total: 4450.

BB Chris ... Half Guard, frame in neck, collar drag, come up to back.

Lots of Excuses. None i want to put down on paper, though.

Still working the 92 Double Sleeve. Not much luck. Same deal with Twister Side ... not sitting on near arm so they keep pushing me down.

Rolling with BB Dean ... passed his guard but not stabilizing very well. He keeps re-Half Guarding.

Monday, December 11, 2017

What I'm Pondering - 1

I. 92 Double Sleeve Guard
 a. Scissor Sweep to the Right
 b. Triangle - get Left leg out and over.

II. Attacks from Mount
 1. Cross Choke - Roger Gracie
 2. S Mount Armbar
 3. Arm Triangle
 4. Ezekiel

17.107 Sunday Confession 4447

Taps: 2. Total: 4447.

Both taps to Brn Joon, a leglock guy and competitor. Tapped to leglock and bow and arrow...hard to escape on the right side.

B.B.... got my Reverse Butterfly Sweep to Side, Spiderweb and tried several different ways, but could not get Armbar. He held on too tight, and time ran out. Still work to do on Armbar break.

Purple ... we kept going back and forth in Half Guard and I realized watching him roll with someone else that he was sweeping me with the same Octopus Sweep I was using on him. I didn’t stabilize very well after my sweep.

Advanced concepts
 1. Combo techs, chaining them together...Armbar-Triangle-omoplata... choke from Mount and Armbar
 2. Sneaky setups ... bridging sweeps to get Underhook, push pull concept
 3. Latest one from E. Bravo ... chaining transitions from his 4 “dead zones” - 1. Mount; 2. Spiderweb; 3. Back; 4. Truck.

Saturday, December 9, 2017

17.106 Sat Breakfast Club 4445

Taps: 4. Total: 4445.

BB Chris ... 2 Half Techs

I. Lapel Sweep from Thur.

II. Brabo Choke from Half Top
 a. wrap lapel over his elbow (i found it easier to wrap under armpit) ... partner's gi might have been shorter perhaps)
 b. knee up, knee cut, pass gi tail to other hand
 c. get his hand across me, my chest pressure on it.

Slowly working my way back to full strength. Rolled with 3 of 4 BB there, one of them newly minted.

10p techs slowly creeping into my game -- Twister Side, Twister roll, 100% sweep --- am i being seduced by the Dark Side of BJJ, aka Eddie Bravo and 10p? I'll start to worry when i do Rubber Guard, Lockdown and Electric Chair.

Was showing Purp Eddie the details of Giggler Sweep and knee up/knee down. That and the Reverse Butterfly Sweep is my two Go-To moves.

Work on: 2on1 Side ESC ... having hard time on left side preventing the Crossface.

Omoplata: Two Setups

From the Closed Guard.

I. K. Brown - Knee Up
 a. Scoot a bit to right
 b. my Left hand grabs same side wrist, traps against my left hip.
 c. Right hand gets Cross Collar grip.
 d. crunch in my left knee to me, pull in with Cross Collar grip, bringing his arm with it and breaking his Posture.
 e. Push his neck/face away with CC grip to make space to get Left leg over and in front his face.
 f. Hold onto the CC grip - that prevents him from rolling / Sit up and reach over with left hand and get grip around his waist.
 g. Flatten him - right foot posts on mat, knee UP, scoot back. Then i straighten BOTH my legs to get heavy on his shoulder to really flatten him. Left hand switches from waist to under his far arm and grabs near collar.
 h. Release right hand CC grip. Bend left leg (points to my right inner thigh), bend my right leg (points to my butt); Right hand reaches under his head as I LIFT up my hips to put FINISHING pressure on his shoulder.

II. B. Faria - Cross Sleeve Grip

 a. Cross Sleeve Pistol Grip / Left hand dives under to Underhook same side Leg.
 b. Right foot presses on same side shoulder as I lift my hips up. That turns his body away as Left leg gets HEAVY on his shoulder.
 c. Bring my legs/knees together, stuff his CC Pistol grip towards between his legs / release grip and grab near Waist/Belt grip
 d. Sit up. Left hand goes over far waist and grabs far side LAPEL. This prevents the ROLL.
 e. Straighten BOTH legs and Hip escape (1 o'clock), little scoots up til he is FLATTENED.
 f. Bend both legs, lean FORWARD, Hip Up for Finish.

Thursday, December 7, 2017

17.105 Thurs Am Club 4441

Taps: 1. Total: 4441.

BB Chris ... I. Opening Closed Guard to Pass, by Standing.

II. Half Guard Sweep with Lapel
 a. Start from Knee Shield and keep frame with right hand to prevent Crossface.
 b. Right hand opens gi on that side, passes over to left hand as i sit up and gets Underhook.
 c. Keeping preventing Crossface with hand on bicep.
 d. Shrimp back and get left foot in for Half Butterfly Hook.
 e. Push on bicep as i Reverse to the Left for the Sweep / even more effective if he has Wizard on me.

Drill: Clinch back of head, elbow push into High Guard. Dude.

Rib Injury update: body at 30-40% capacity. Had to tap twice to Body Triangle on injured side. At least quit while i was a little behind and left a couple of rolls on the table. Not like Turkey Day where i kept going until i got hurt again.

It's sensitive but not as bad as before.

17.104 Turkey Open Roll 4436

At Legacy Gen pop, not just the Confession Sunday boys n gals. Fifty or 60 peeps, very crowded! Hand only about 3 square feet to roll before bumping into someone and have to move and reset.

Still got some good rolls in, tapped to BBs Tarca n NohoSteve.

With White Belts - got mount and drilled Serrano Cross Choke fake Armbar, and Mount KoB dismount to Side to Side.
Blues - got Giggler Sweep on a couple of them.
Purples n Browns - kept it fairly straight, 92 Guard 2on1 to Back and even Reverse Butterfly Sweep - my welcome to my game Sweep! Also got a 100% Sweep from Half Guard bottom vs Purple.

Keep working:

High Guard setup - cross collar or back of head and push in on elbow.
Cross sleeve, Underhook, foot on shoulder Omoplata.

Last roll with a very slick Blue who knee cut very high, almost belly or shoulder cut pass, slick KoB, and I tweaked my RIB again, barely finished the roll. And I’m thinking I should have quit while my rib was still holding up, there were still people rolling and no way I’m leaving early unless I’m injured.
So most likely I would have kept rolling til the rib gave out int the next roll or the next. Sure sign of a junkie.

Saturday, November 18, 2017

17.103 Sat Breakfast Club 4432

Taps: 2. Total: 4432

BB Chris
Warmups: From Back, Double Unders, Armbar

Tech 1: From Back, Seatbelt control, fall to underhook side Armbar
 a. falling to that side traps his elbow on the mat.
 b. push face away, then Kimura grip, leg over for Armbar.

Tech 2: Armbar break, if he holds S grip
 a. Kimura grip, bottom leg through his arms, then over foot over the top and through too, X on the legs.
 b. Shake, shake on the Kimura grip.

Tech 3: from Back, Bow and Arrow Choke
 a. underhook arm opens gi, feeds to choking hand.
 b. underhook hand posts on mat and helps swivel body / underhook hand grabs the pants at knee.

Tech 4: Defends Bow and Arrow, gets under elbow and gets head out.
 a. But that arm is free and floating, grab it for the Armbar.

Rolled at about 50%, still feeling the rib. Didn't fight or muscle, gave up some positions and tapped when normally i could have gotten out.

*Work on:
 -Side ESC, and twon1
 -High Guard
 -Octopus

Drill: Turtle juji / Mt armbar. / Kob to Mt.

Saturday, November 11, 2017

17.102 Saturday Breakfast Club 4430

Taps: 5. Total: 4430.

BB Chris ...
Tech 1 - from Knees, shoot in for Double, switch to Single and Sit Out to come up on side of Turtle.

Tech 2 - Turtle Reverse: trap far arm, straighten my near arm and far leg and roll for the Sweep.

Tech 3 - Clock Clock variation/Switch Side.
 a. from Turtle: left hand goes in for the Choke, he defends with both hands and pulls that hand down; use my Right hand over the top of his hands, and get Choke grip.
 b. Swing over the the other side of him, and do Clock Choke on that side.

Skipped the Sunday, Tues and Thursday this week. Just couldn't stay away from Saturday Class. Rib still bothering me in certain positions. Had to give up on a couple of dominant positions and really not fight some losing ones.

Going to have to skip Sunday to let it heal some more.

Drill: Side ESC.

* 100% Sweep, pulled it off on Blue Dae but not sure if i did it right. Ok, i did it mostly right. Sweep away from the hold, but need to bridge more.

Saturday, November 4, 2017

17.101 Saturday Breakfast Club 4425 - Injury Update

Taps: 5. Total: 4425.

BB Joel teaching. They no longer have the Sunday classes. Maybe he's going to be the regular Sat. instructor.

Lots of peeps, makes sense. All the Sunday guys have to come now.

Tech 1 - Attack Turtle with Rolling Bow and Arrow.

Four taps to BB Bekim, and one to Brn Wolfie.

Injury Update: it's a Floating Rib. Thought it was better, but now. Had to stop rolling after two rolls. Crap. I could be out for months. This might take me out for the rest of the year.

Rolling with Brn Arman and trying to escape an armbar. Tried to Back Roll and swing my legs side to side and that combo movement might have PULLED a muscle between my ribs. Still a little sore. Might have to give it a rest for the weekend.

 c. reach and grab his belt, crab both his thighs and Back Take.

A new group of Whites. Hope they stick it out. I can only tell them to take a Selfie today, so they can compare it to 6 months from now. If they stick with it, they will see a transformation.

Work:

  • Kesa ESC, Side ESC
  • Closed Guard / Falcon control - overhook and Rnc to sweep.
  • 92 two on one ... i made a discovery: I can use it to Giggler Sweep, Hip Bump and Scissor. Foot on bicep to Triangle and push away to Omoplata? Wow, lots and lots of possibilities here.
  • Octopus Sweep

17.98 Sunday Confessions 4415

Taps: 7. Total: 4415.

Most of the taps to BB Tarca. I cannot pass his guard. Just flailing, floundering. He did show me a Closed Guard Break and Pass using the Belt, pushing down on knee, that he said BB Chris (my instructor) showed him ages ago.

Funny how it all comes around. I go to Open Mat, and is showed a tech passed down from my instructor.

Just when i think i've showed the Lockdown, it comes back and bites me in the ass. And what i've learned is that I can pass a Blue Belt Lockdown, but this morning was all Purple Belt Lockdown and they gave me a hard time.

Back to the Lab to revisit Lockdown Pass. Among lots of other things.

Saturday, October 21, 2017

17.97 Saturday Breakfast Club & Annual Renato Seminar 4408

Taps: 1. Total: 4408.

Open mat before Seminar and more rolls post Seminar. The one tap from BB Bek, who i think was frustrated from the previous roll with tough technical Brn and took it out on me on the next roll bc he went pretty hard. I don't mind but it goes to show ya even BB have egos.

  Seminar Notes

I. Warm ups with Standing Elbow strikes, into Double Leg, outside trip.

II. Standing, clinch with left hand into Guillotine, he defends with arm over my shoulder, switch hands.
 a. Right hand shoots under his neck, palm up, connect with the left bicep for RNC grip, left hand on his back. Arch back for finish with Darce. (comes on quick, feels like crank then choke sets in right after).

III. Same tech as Single Leg Counter. And can do from sitting Butterfly Guard.

IV. Mount Control
 a. Grapevine the legs and transition to both legs on his hips / thighs.

V. Mount Choke (basic Cross Choke with wicked details)
 a. Double pull on his collars with both hands to get slack out
 b. first choking hand goes with with closed screwed hand, not open (otherwise he'll grab my open fingers)
 c. get deep grip and elbow bent down on his chest.
 d. Swim other hand wide circle to other side of his head, elbow against side of his head and press back on his head as pressure down with hips, chest.

**VI. Break Posture from Closed Guard
 a. Move side to side, get off centerline, PULL down two on one on back of his shoulder, with a little leg help. Hip out and Omoplata and Side Guard are right there.
 b. Also, get grips in for Cross Choke - for second hand and finish, move to the other side.

VII. ** Closed Guard Armbar - variations on a Classic.
 a. control same side arm, ie with my left hand on his right wrist, make sure wrist is UP.
 b. Right hand his framing/pushing on his right shoulder (I don't want him close, that will kill my armbar)
 c. Left foot on his hip and HIP UP as my Right foot kicks under his armpit, keep my leg straight ... all these motions will extend his arm.
 d. I can swing my left leg over his head if his posture is broken enough, or reach with my right hand on his head to pull down a little to get leg over.

**VIII. Closed Guard Triangle
 a. ie with Left leg bent and behind the head -- need to put my left hand on my left knee to FRAME (keep the structure of Triangle intact: if that knee gets close to my nose, then he escapes and passes).
 b. other hand grabs the left ankle that's behind his head.
 c. My Right leg posts on his hip to keep him away and me scooting back and squared up or to left, NOT to the right, he'll get out!
 d. If he lifts his leg, then hook it with my right leg that was posting on his hip.

* Finish detail: Push his head straight Back/away - not the usual pulling his head down.

**IX. Scissor Bump Sweep
 a. all about opening, connecting the legs and keeping tight.
 b. Setup the same as Classic Scissor Sweep: same side sleeve grip with the left hand, Right hand cross collar grip.
 c. Open legs, left leg outside his knee close, Right leg comes up under his armpit/tight near his hip/butt (keeping foot on the MAT).
 d. Right foot presses against the hip as i come up on the left elbow in a HIP BUMP SWEEP motion for the sweep.

X. Choke from Back / sneaky detail
 a. Seatbelt grip - underhook opens gi as usual but the Choking hand goes INSIDE the gi, hides the choking hand.
 b. then opens gi again Choking hand can grip the collar for the Choke.

XI. Side Attack - Kimura Grip Armbar
 a. Get him on his side, slide right leg under his back, Left leg swings over the head ... practice that motion, then fall back for Armbar.
* Can also do with 2on1 Grip on his sleeve at wrist, instead of Kimura grip.

17.96 Sunday Confessions 4407

Taps: 4. Total: 4407.

Brn Ray tip: My Side Control, esp Kimura grip has to be more pressure and heavy. So frustrating because he's right and that's just one of so many things (Side ESC etc etc) that i need to work on.

Purp Ira getting very tricky with his lapel wraps. Only a week ago, i did the double open mat sessions with him. Much trickier since then.

Still trying to get the 92 to work.

Man, needing this week off. Might have overdone it a bit this week. Rest and recharge til Sat and Sun.

Side ESc, Back Esc, Arm Triangle ESC.

Brn Joon showing some folks the Flying Triangle from Knees:
 1. Guy gets cross collar grip with his right hand; go under that and get same side collar grip with my left hand.
 2. Right hand gets same collar, cross collar grip, a two on one on that collar.
 3. Left knee comes up off the mat, then right foot.
 4. As I'm pulling down with the two-on-one grip, Right leg swings over his left arm and over his head, chops down on the back of his neck, and as i'm falling back down to the mat, Lock in the Triangle and pass his right arm over to my right.

* Done right i should have a soft landing with my shoulders hitting the mat.
** Done wrong: I come down hard, back of my head hitting the mat.

Guess it would be safer to fall forward than backwards.

Saturday, October 14, 2017

17.95 Saturday Breakfast Club 4403

Taps: 1. Total: 4403.

Small crowd for a Saturday. Unusual. 2 BB instructors: Joel and Jason, and I was the next highest belt. The only Brown, with 2 Purp, one Blue, 3 Whites and a partridge in a pear tree. How did that happen?

BB Jason ... Closed Guard Sneaky Lapel Choke (i saw it on BJJ ninja). Pass it to the Cross Collar, and grab it with the other hand and get it on other side of his head for the Choke.

BB Joel ... continuing on from his Cross Collar Guard. After the drag/pull down into a Loop Choke Finish.
ie Left hand cross collar, drag / pull him into Turtle, loop choke, right foot hooks that side arm, fall to that side and left leg over his head to push on top of his neck for the Loop Choke Finish.

Work on:
1. Kesa ESC.
2. Aly Lapel Armbar
3. Sky Pass.

Thursday, October 12, 2017

17.94 Thurs AM 4402

Taps: 11. Total: 4402.

Roll call: From 4, 5 White Belts on Tues AM to 0 this morning. What happened to all the White Belts. Chris was not suited up but there still were 4 other BB on the mat: Vince, Mike, Mord

And no techniques - straight rolling in the first hour to all Positional Training in the second, with free rolls at the end.

I might have overdone it a bit today: I did a 5 minute Yoga and 100 KB Swings before i came to class. Nothing in my stomach but a cup of Bulletproof Coffee.

So by the time i had freakin Purp Morgan on top of me, who used to be a bodybuilder and now a Purple Belt, on top of me in Kesa, i was dying. I would have puked a few times if there were anything in my stomach. Also, my right thigh was cramping up.

He's got a smashing Side and wicked Kob and Kesa, too. And i tried a few things to escape and he kept countering and I finally TAPPED to the Pressure and one second later, the freakin bell went off.

I realize now I needed to get my Elbow back. He was pulling up on it and nullifying all my ESC attempts. And one ESC i didn't attempt - pushing off his chest/collar grip while i scrimp away.

My BJJ game, i realize is similar to my Chess game and the reason people, especially lower belts, like to roll with me is because i don't go too hard and they feel like they have a chance against me. Same thing in Chess.

BB Vince showing misc Blue Girl ... Flower Sweep from Guard, and if they lift that leg up, Underhook it and continue on with the Sweep.

Retirement Vision -- i just saw what i want to do when i retire in a few years: Train Full time. Travel and Train. i thought about teaching or maybe opening a school, but that's too much. I'd rather just train every day or every other day.

Watch and Drill
1. Sky Pass
2. Back ESC
3. Side ESC
4. Kesa ESC.

92 Guard - making inches of progress. gotta get my foot on hip to keep distance. Hip Up and get on my hip to expose Angle to the Back.

Tuesday, October 10, 2017

17.93 Tues AM 4391

Taps: 1. Total: 4391.

BB Chris ... I. RDLR Waiter Sweep (rerun)

II. DLR push on armpit to Back Take (rerun).

BB Joel in the house. Taught in the second hour.

Cross Collar Series, with a few different details, variations from what i know.

Var. 1 - Collar Drag - break grips on my knees and legs, then when he reaches in to re-grip, then Drag. BUT he showed a drag straight back (instead to the side) and landing on both my knees.

Var. 2 - When he tries to break Collar Grip with both hands ... Push with it, NOT forward to near shoulder but ACROSS his chest (more power that way), and lead leg on Combat Base comes up on outside of his knee (same side as Collar grip hand), and Knock him over for the Pass into Side and even back step into S Mount.
** On the Push, i usually go for the Knee Tap to get him down.

Funny, I'm a Brown Belt and one of the regulars. I know everyone there, except for new White Belts. But i don't feel like a Badass. I feel like a competent Purple. and I like to roll and roll and roll.

Speaking of White Belts, there were a lot in today. Felt like he was running a Groupon? There were four, and one stayed to the end working with another Brown. He's probably got the best chance of sticking with it. We'll see.

Another White was a Big, Strong Guy. Heavy. If he just sticks it out for 6 to 8 months, he's going to look so much better, not to mention his Jits game, too.

Also, on Octo Half -- come up on my ELBOW!

Sunday, October 8, 2017

17.92 Sunday Open, Part 2 - Old Man Open Mat, 4390 - Second NAP!

Taps: 10. Total: 4390.

40 and Over Open Mat. Went from 1pm-4pm. i think i rolled for a couple of hours, at least.

Got three rolls in with BB Chris, the host. Not as many as last time - about 9 total, with 7 at the most on the mat, with people leaving early and couple showing up late.

Three very heavy Purples and also, big Ira showed up, too. I rolled with him last this morning at the Confessions. He got to train double because it was his birthday.

Later, another big Purple showed up. Very technical, and he had a wicked Half Guard game, a lot i recognize from my game but he had tricky stuff, too.

I asked about his Go-To Half Guard Pass -- lapel control on undertook side, reverse Sit, near knee against the guy's hip and get leg out or turn to Far Side.

Blue i met at JJ in the Park (Maibu) about a year ago was there. Loves arm bars, gave me a tip, which was X Bar (bottom leg curls behind the head, top leg over the top.)

Small Purp who came late, 130lbs … had me in Arm Triangle - couldn't finish. Tried it again later in the round and i reacted too late and did not tap … SNOOZE and OUT. Seemed like i was out for a long time and spasms when i came, too just like the first time.

He had a really good Knee Cut and he finished it on Far Side, if he couldn't get his leg out.

Pleasant dream. Wish i could remember it.

17.91 Sunday Open Mat, Part 1 - Sunday Confessions 4380

Taps: 7. Total: 4380.

Sunday Confessions, Masters 2 (36 and over).

Funny, strange. Second roll, i'm rolling with this beefy Brown, no stripes, just like me and i knew he was going to go hard with ego and all. whatev. he's got me in Side Control and he's stalling in N/S and someone is saying something to him and he gets off me and LEAVES??!!

Turns our BB Tarca told him it was Masters 2 Open Mat and he was welcome to roll today but implied that he was too young and couldn't come again. Tarca felt bad. Not sure who invited him.

Speaking of Tarca, he was showing nogi girl lulu (not sure what belt she's got) the Ankle Lock Counter to Straight Footlock … can do to either leg, same side arm scoops under the ankle, other hand comes over top of the ankle like the Silverado Break for Armbar.

Purple Ira just killed my Octopus, as did BB Steve. Other Purp, big guy, killed my Knee Cut because he had a grip on my leg/pants. Must remember Ira tip to get my elbow down to mat for Armbar Esc or to get it safe.

Cross grip bump or swing leg over
Side attacks - Milton arm bar and Side to crucifix

 c. Right leg comes off armpit and tucked in behind his calf (mini Hook), left hand lets go of ankle and sits up and grabs belt.
 d. Right hand keeps the sleeve grip and pushes into him, as left DLR leg pendulums up in air and i scoot myself to right, near his head ... That will turn him, giving me the Back.

IV. Closed Guard - Side Guard Sweep.

17.85 Sunday Confessions 4365

Taps: 7. Total: 4365.

Cross Collar Guard … 1. Push Pass; 2. Collar Drag; 3. Loop Choke.

2on1 Sleeve 93 … Push on knee to Back Take.

BB Steve … hard time escaping his positions … just go from one bad position to another … Armbar Escape to being Mounted; Back Escape to Spider web; Mount Esc to Side, etc.

Need to tighten up my escapes, especially Back ESC and Side.

*Trying CBD oil … to see if it will help with recovery and aches. Day 1: couple of drops before and after.

BB Pike … didn't get chance to roll with him but saw him showing a RDLR series, especially vs the Knee Cut.

1. Underhook ankle of Knee Cut and Sweep.
2. Or Invert under and Back Take.

Wanna drill it.

Also, Back Attacks ... getting to the back more, but not being able to finish.

Saturday, September 23, 2017

17.84 Saturday Breakfast Club 4358

Taps: 9. Total: 4358.

BB Chris … I. Closed Guard Flower Sweep … make sure to pendulum, and swing back to scissor.

Nightmare Brown Pierre came to visit. He moved to Arizona. Also, saw Brown Z - toughest, nicest guy i know. He's huge.

Where did the 9 taps come from? Rolled with Z twice, and Pierre at the end … that's about 6 taps there. I know Purple Stamina Comp guy. He got me a couple times. He had faster transitions than me.

Watched Purple David dominate Night Brown Eddie … who i always had a tough time with. Maybe he underestimated Dave. He has long, flexible legs, but i think he might have jumped a level these past few weeks.

Last few times i rolled with him, we get stuck in Half and just sweep each back and forth.

Not much luck with Cross Collar Guard. Got the 93 set up easily though, couldn't progress from there bc i forgot what to do if i can't make it to the Back on the right.

Didn't work any High Guard. Hip Bump only worked on Whites. Try back of neck Posture Break into the Hip Bump.

17.83 Sunday Confessions 4349

Taps: 6. Total: 4349.

Good crowd, bummed i had to leave early, didn't get any rolls after the photo session.

BB Tarca … being a Black Belt has wicked Guard either side, so no luck using Lepri Knee Cut to Far side has been my go to lately. He got me four times with leg locks.

Need to do better job Passing Half Knee Shield, too. Get them parallel and Far side.

Working High Guard, Cross Collar Series, and Octopus Half.

Saturday, September 16, 2017

17.82 Sat. Breakfast Club 4343

Taps: 2. Total: 4343.

BB Chris … couple of warmup techs and then a DLR to Pull down Triangle.
 1. Reg. DLR start with left foot hook, left hand on ankle or ankle gi grip, Right foot on the thigh keeping tension and distance, Right hand gets same side sleeve (his left).
 2. Push out with my Right foot, sit up and pass Right hand sleeve grip under his leg to my left hand.
 3. Clamp with my left foot on his lead leg, Right hand pulls down on his collar to the right, he posts his hand on the mat.
 4. As he turns into me to regain posture, swing my right leg over and lock in Triangle.

Seeing that Cross Collar series in Taiwan really helped me put it into my toolbox, getting lots of mileage with it. I know Kron uses it and different people haves shown me pieces of it but Taiwan Chris really put it all together for me and it's really Clicked.

I reach with my left and feed it to my right for cross collar.
 1. I puash and knee tap / knee pick with the other hand for the Pass.
 2. He pushes back into me and I pull for Collar Drag and Back Take.
 3. He gets pants grips, torreandos to my right, I let him Pass right into Loop Choke.
 4. He tries to pass to left, I follow and keep him square.

Work on:

  • High Guard
  • Beck's 2on1 kimura grip Triangle.
  • 92 Guard.
  • One arm kimura sweep.
  • Jake Mc's Reverse Half Sweep.

 b. Come over top of his head, come down on his neck like Papercutter Choke.
 c. Can finish with one hand or other hand can come under and grip higher up on the gi.

*Really like Lepri's Knee Cut (that i work on the Far Side - to right) ... it works pretty well all way up to low level Purple.

So there were two brand new White Belts and they were working on Basic Guard Pass, shown by Brown G ... because the Bluey that was showing them didn't know what he was doing. Later, Bluey calls me over to show them the N/S Choke ... my God! i so didn't want to because they First Day Whites ... they should be working 40 other things before they learn a Submission.

blue belts should not be teaching. there i said it.

ok rant over.

BB Chris … review techs.

 2. Got my Half Guard as usual the first time around, but not second time.
 3. Played around with 92 Guard, 2on1 sleeve. No luck. Not concerned, first time trying it.

Need to break down posture better in Closed Guard when they posture back. Sit up and grab back of their head, go for Sleeve Hip Bump and when they push back, control back of their head and go to High Guard.

17.79 Back to Sunday OG OM 4338

Taps: 8. Total: 4338.

Rolled with both Prof. Tarca and Crane .. Prof Crane worked his Turtle and escaping with wrestlers over my neck move.

Tried Schreiner's N/S Armbar -- need to review ... 3, 4 times with no luck in getting my leg over.

Passes... narrowed down to Lo Torreando spin, Keenan Double Under, Lepri Knee Cut.

Try to get some Closed Guard ... high Guard and Rener easy Triangle.

Monday, September 4, 2017

17.78 Labor Day A.M. 4330

Taps: 0. Total: 4330.

Brown Arman ran his bootcamp Hell Conditioning/Warmups - 40 minutes long. That's how he usually runs his Monday A.M. classes, and i experienced it first time, first hand.

People didn't have much left to roll afterwards, but still got in a few good rolls.

*Closed Guard -- blanked out, tried elbow tuck in High Guard vs Purp Tony and he postured up and i gave up on all my attacks. Sheesh.
Goto -- Cross Sleeve Hip Bump.

** Better luck with Octopus Back Takes.

* Armbar ESC -- scissor my legs, come up into him. Keep getting my Back taken as i come out of that escape.

Saturday, September 2, 2017

17.77 Sat. Breakfast Club 4330

Taps: 4. Total: 4330.

BB Chris ...

I. Closed Guard, he lifts one knee, underhook to Sweep and Armbar.

II. Armbar Break from Spider Web / Chris variation.
 1. Bottom underhooks the arm, my wrist under the attacked wrist (wrist to wrist).
 2. Push his elbow under my armpit, grab my own collar.
 3. Top hand posts on mat and lean down towards his head ... this will put pressure on his weakest point (his wrist) and torque his elbow in bad ankle.

Blue Shane asked about my Reverse Butterfly Sweep; i was showing it when BB Mike showed a Counter to it. Never knew about it. Right my the Sweep, he hooks my non-Butterfly hook leg, and grips my collar and comes up.

Liking:

1. Telles One Arm Kimura Sweep to Both Sides
2. Rev. Kimura Grip
3. High Guard / Swim Move
4. Flower Sweep Variation / Kick to non-Knee up side (don't even need the pants/knee grip - that telegraphs it)

Thursday, August 31, 2017

17.76 Thursday A.M. Club 4326

Taps: 2. Total: 4326.

First hour - open mat, just light rolling.

Second Hour - Q & A with BB Vince and BB Mike. And Positional Drilling. Then more rolling.

Didn't feel like training but glad that i did.

**Cross Sleeve Grip Hip Bump Sweep from Closed Guard. Hit that a couple of times vs Blue David.

* Shoulder Gable Grip and Half Butterfly Sweep -- could not finish. (Butterfly hook needs to be on opposite as the Grip and sweep to same side as Grip. Or just 100% Sweep - Bridge without hooks and take him to the right.)

BB Vince tip: Side Control Top
 1. Side to N/S Transition.
 2. If he turns into me -- immediately block with my knee up for KoB.
 3. Lift his bottom leg, go back to N/S and Side Control.
or N/S then Side Control on other Side.
** From KoB - Windshield Wiper to MOUNT.

Bonus: one thing i noticed Vince doing when he was under Side Control - he controlled the top arm as other guy tried to bring his arm back toward Vince's head, there was all that space for Vince Reverse Shrimp and recover Guard.
Important bc i have usually the regular way -- Shrimp and Turn in to Recover Guard, not the other way. feel i'm not explaining it right.

Been playing the Cross Collar Guard a lot. The series i learned in Taiwan. I knew all the pieces but PMA Chris put it together and it's kind of like Kron's Game.
 1. Push / Pull and Collar Drag to Back Take.
 2. Push to Angle Pick / Knee Pick.
 3. He tries to Grip Break with Two-on One -- Ankle Pick as he pulls back.
 4. If he goes left, follow; if he goes Right, let him Pass and into Loop Choke.
 5. Force Loop Choke -- getting above him, tucking his head under my elbow.

Really lovin' this series.

17.75 Sat Breakfast Club back at Home base 4324

Taps: 0. Total: 4324.

BB Chris .. Tech 1 - Closed Guard, Hip Bump Sweep with Cross Sleeve Grip.

Tech 2 - Closed Guard, Cross Collar grip, that side Lapel Tail wrap over Choke.
(could not get the finish on this in drills. perhaps the angle? This is the same tech shown by BJJ Ninja)

Tech 3 - Closed Guard, vs Standing, open my guard, grab both ankles, push my knees into hip to knock down. Come up into Mount.

No taps, but lots of Blues giving me fits, but did end up in Cruxifix with Blue Eddie, that was completely opportunistic and accidental.

Lots of Whites too i haven't seen before, must be a new crop coming up.

Roll call: Purp David giving me fits, too. Rolled with Brn Wolfie but not Brn Kennedy. BB Jason in the house. think he might be injured. didn't see him rolling with anyone. the rest were Blues and Whites.

Sunday, August 20, 2017

17.74 Sunday OG OM 4324

Taps: 8. Total: 4324.

Back in the USA.

Saw a couple of cool techs.

Prof Crane showing a Closed Guard Lapel, foot under the armpit into Omoplata.

Prof Tarca ... Half Guard Sweep ... Cross Collar Frame, his top arm on Underhook side, control it and over under and roll to sweep. Need to get vid next Sunday.

Failed to finish Bow and Arrow couple of times that i got there ... weak grip. But he didn't escape because i kept my elbow down and near the mat.

Purp Ira good tips: i can't crossing my arms and legs the wrong way.

Caught in Arm Triangle a couple of times: got out once, the other, i think he transitioned to Ezekiel.

New Prof Steve ... small, old man jj and he always taps me with ANGLES. not much room for normal escapes.

Friday, August 4, 2017

17.73 Taipei Training 4...4316

Taps: 7. Total: 4316.

Back to PMA BJJ ... Open Mat and class. There is the BB and one Brown (who I didn't roll it's this time), so how is it possible to tap 7 times? Two or three were to the BB, but the rest were to lower belts??!!!

Uh, yes. Can't underestimate the Blues and Purple. I get lazy and tired and get myself in dangerous positions. Against Whites, I can usually get out, but not always against colors.

Class tech ... nice long sequence broken down into Four parts.
 I. Collar Guard Ankle Pick , when he tries to break collar grip and pulls back

II. Into Buchecha Pass, hand on hip, hand on outside knee, sprawl back, or even X Pass to Side Control.

III. In Side, crossface hand grips top gi for control and he Turtles
 1. Get my near knee in, outside foot between his leg, shovel/torque it out
 2. Get near leg in, hook other foot in place, shrimp out to get outside foot in for second hook.

 IV. Seatbelt control to RNC
 1. Underhook arm controls far arm, choking hand clamps on shoulder and start going for RNC.

Catalogue of aches
 1. Finger on left hand (jammed from last session)
 2. Right knee sore
 3. Back of neck -- bad gi burn, skin scrapped from people pulling on gi for the choke
 4. Right calf (thought it was a cramp), but just remembered that Calf Slicer that Purple got me with.
 5. Right elbow ... Armbar

Some of the taps ... Armbar, kimura, calf slicer and a couple of Ezekiels from Mount. People like the Ezekiel from Mount here.

Wednesday, August 2, 2017

17.72 Taiwan training 3: 4309

At Taiwan BJJ.

Taps: 3. Total: 4309.

Wednesday nooner, Beginners fundamental class, taught by Purple belt, all in Chinese.

Facilities were nice, bigger than PMA, so not bumping into walls or into others and having to reset often, and they even have showers.

Tech by Purple ... whole series on Half Guard bottom.
 I. Flattened, top guy has crossface and underhook... frame, frame, shrimp, shrimp, and get half Butterfly hook in

II. Option 2: shovel hook with outside foot, near elbow, same side as crossface -- elbow escape into Closed Guard.

III. Lockdown Sweep... Bridge into him to the right, underhook his thigh, sweep to the left.

IV. Vs Lockdown, he frames and stays back ... Leite Dogfight KneeTap Push Sweep
 1. Come up, sit up and get underhook, my right side is on my elbow.
 2. Come up to Dogfight, both knees on mat, tap his outside knee or pull his knee in, and push, lean into him for sweep.

Armbar Break from Spider Web series
 I. Top hand weaves in, lean down towards his feet, bottom right hand underhooks is leg.

Option II: switch hands, bottom hand weaves in between his arms - Triangle/ Armbar option
 1. Bottom leg between his arms, top leg comes off his face, S Mount figure
 2. Reach behind his head, grab my right ankle, let him come up, lock in Triangle.

Option 3: X Guard his arm to break
1. Back to top arm weaves in, top leg goes between his arms, then bottom leg comes on top and x Guard his off attacked arm.
2. Lean toward his feet again, extending with X legs, and lastly, start moving my top arm from his biceps, to his forearm, and close to his wrist (weakest point) ... that should break open his Armbar defense.

Lots of techniques, no positional drilling or rolling.

But I stayed for Open Mat, and so did most of the people in the class.

Man, I am so lazy with my Half Guard, giving up Underhooks and the crossface, just absolutely getting Knee Cut to death by the color belts

Played with the Collar Guard (series I learned at PMA), Drag, loop choke and ankle pick ... pretty effective with White, colored ... not so much. I going to keep playing with it.

Plan to go back to the Advanced class to see what that's like, since it's taught by resident BB.

Sunday, July 30, 2017

17.71 Taipei vacay 2 4206

Taps: 3. Total: 4296

PMA BJJ session 2.

Open mat, followed by a class. Another brown belt, grizzled old veteran with heavy pressure game. Stuck under his Side control the whole time, and any time he was getting any where near a sub we hit the wall and reset. Nice guy.

Also rolled with BB Chris Ng, owner/instructor... rock solid balance, could not move him an inch. Also, had wicked crossface.

Tech 1 ... Sitting Guard Collar Drag ... 1. Come up top Turtle, 2. Go into Single Leg, 3. He just turns over and plays Open Guard.

Tech 2 ... Sitting Guard, Loop Choke
I, grip gi at about collar bone level
 2. snap down head or get up to get above his head to wrap his head
 3. Curl my wrist, cup his chin and dive under, in front of his arm and head.
Finish 1: he stays on his knees
Finish 2: he rolls over, I come up top, N/S, almost Side Control.

Ends class with positional drill, sweep or sub ... Sub only is quite trying but good practice.

Wednesday, July 26, 2017

17.70 Taipei Vacay training 4203

Taps: 1. Total: 4203.

BB Chris Ng at PMA BJJ in Taipei, Taiwan. Wednesday night.

Small space, about the size ( I'd say 200 sq ft) of Steve's Noho Mma, but it was at least wider, not as long.

Showed up early, watched the tail end of the Beginner Class ... looked like he teaches one long sequence technique... Back esc into Closed Guard, and bottom guy goes for Hip Bump Sweep fake into Triangle.

Class taught in English and Chinese.

Classs I joined in next was All Belts ... I was only Brown; there was one purple, maybe three blues and rest was whites. Still a pretty good turnout for such a small space ...maybe 15 people.

Tech I ... Closed Guard break, standing to knee cut, and variation with jaw turn.

Ended class with 30 minutes of positional drilling ... pass and sub or sweep.

We do the same drill at our home academy but this version is much, much tougher:
 1. Bottom guy sweeps or subs; he wins he stays. After three wins, he has to get out of line.
 2. Top guy starts standing and in Open Guard and must Sub, which means he has to Pass first, t,hen sub.

After this, there was still a little time for rolling but no one seemed interested and I didn't want to push it though I did want to get one regular roll in. But there's time. I'm planning on coming crack for open mat in a couple of days.

As for me, played a lot of Half Guard vs knee cut, and swept from there. Almost becoming a crutch. Need to get actively into Closed Guard or start developing an Open Guard.

Sunday, July 16, 2017

17.69 Sunday Confession 4202

Taps: 4. Total: 4202.

Workshoping: Lepri Knee Cut ... finally ran into some counters ... 1. DLR hooked my knee cut leg, pulled me back over to center or to left and even swept me; 2. Pushed my knee and kept it from getting down to mat ... shoulda picked up that elbow? 3. BB Tarca thumb in grip on collar frame and choked me.

Very nice ... 2nd hand goes over top, 4 fingers palm up ... and as I was trying that from knees starting on very next roll ... the Jerky Brown was not pleased and got the very same grips on me, and Passed my guard and I thought he would release but he was not happy and I was just watching him work as I Went Under!!!

Only the second time I've been choked out. Didn't even realize until I came out of it. I do remohave a very pleasant dream and wishing I could remember it.

Workshoping: Keenan's Armbar finish ... could not get it.

Timer was set to 8 minute rounds. Didn't do the full rounds, some were 4 to 7 but still worked the cardio, damn.

Saturday, July 15, 2017

17.68 Saturday Breakie Club 4198

 High Guard
 Armbar Break - Keenan
 Armbar Break - Silverado
Lepri Knee Cut to the Right

   e. Flatten and pivot to finish Pass.

Thursday, July 13, 2017

17.67 Wed Night 4197

Taps: 4. Total: 4197.

BB Chris ... Closed Guard, Grip Break Overhook to Triangle.
*Key: getting the leg out - 1. shrimp shrimp to make room; 2. put foot on his bicep and kick away; 3. push wrist down.

Man, really wish i could make the 6pm Open Mat ... a whole hour of rolling before an hour and half Class at 7pm. Couple of weeks ago, i was able to make the last 10 minutes.

Yesterday, i was late to the 7pm Class, 15-20 minutes. Stressed, late, lots of traffic on the way, but Man, when class was over, i felt so relaxed. BJJ Therapy!!

Really really grateful, and appreciative to Chris for the culture of the place. I go to Open Mats all ove the place and train whenever and wherever i can, but i'll always come back here. It's HOME.

There's a lot of tough mofos here.

i gotta to tell him that next time i see him, privately.

Mantra:

1. When on Bottom, MOVE, Get OUT.
2. In Closed Guard, ABA -- Always be Attacking. Collar Drag, Choke, Armbar, Back Take ... cycle through.

Purp Liran got a Darce on me... i was lazy in defense, let him lock his hands, and his technique was NOT good. Took him three tries, and adjustments and i had to tap to the Crank and not the Choke. Forgot to tell him he needs to hook my leg to keep me close and crunch.

So i need to get away and get FLAT.

Annoyed and disappointed that i tapped to Breadcutter from Side and Wristlock over the leg from Kesa Side. Thought i was pass that stage. Although it was two BB who got those on me.

Side ESC -- Diff. Path ... need to come up on my elbow.

Lepri Knee Cut -- need to push down on bottom leg.

ABA.

 * also Guillotine, getting first hand, thumb next to his chin/ear.

I felt sucky today, going against lots of Browns and BB Mike.

Troubleshooting:
*Knee Cut to the Right, realized i need to keep his bottom leg stapled to the mat.

** High Guard -- need to keep his posture broken, his head down.

*** Didn't even work on Chad's Overshook to Triangle & Half to Triangle.

BJJ Peeves

1. White Belts who wear Shoyoroll Gis.
2. Celebrities who don't go to Group Classes. They only take privates. (not sure why i'm peeved by it, but i am.)
3. People who hand me excuses, ie. they are bigger, stronger, younger, have been Wrestling, trained Judo, etc. Don't care. I can find my own excuses, thank you. In fact, i'd rather not. So you don't need to hand me any ready-made excuses to make me feel better. If you caught me, you caught me. Period.
As the great Kurt O says, "sometimes you get go."

17.65 Sunday Confessions 4187

Taps: 5. Total: 4187.

Got of roll with Felicia Oh, one of the Dirty Dozen. Check that off the bucket list.

update with Roll Call: seeing the pics - damn, 10 Browns on the mat! three purps, 2 blues and three BB.

I've met and rolled with:
Alberto Crane
Sean Roberts
Felicia Oh

I've met:
Letitica Riberio
Magno Renato
Royce Gracie
Bear Quitugua

There's a lot more on my bucket list.

New mantra: MOVE! GET OUT! ... too often i'm chillin' in bottom, in a bad position, just because i'm comfortable and catching my breath doesn't mean i'm in danger. Need to Move and Get Out.

Work on:
Side ESC -- Different Path / halfway there, doing something wrong on second half of escape.
Passes - Lepri Knee Cut and NicR's Floating Pass.

17.64 Saturday Breakfast Club 4182

Taps: 1. Total: 4182.

BB Chris ... review of Half Guard Passes with Lapel.
 I. Knee Cut
II. Switch grips, reach back and release my foot.

Was partnered up with BB Mike ... wow, heavy heavy crossface with the shoulder.

In the house: BB Jason, BB Mike and BB Martin, lots of the regular Browns, purples and blues and only ONE lonely White. I felt bad for him. Weird i knew every single person there, except for him.

Funny, he asked where i got the water bottle with the school logo, if it was available on the website, because a bunch of us had water bottles with the school logo. I told him, it's just a sticker that bunch of us put on our bottles.

Drill fool: Passes
1. Lepri Knee Cut
2. Lepri Jumping
3. Luta's Floating
4. Buchecha's Push X.

Thursday, June 29, 2017

17.63 Wednesday Night 4181

Taps: 3. Total: 4181.

BB Chris ... Half Guard Top Series.
 I. Darce vs his Underhook and Underhooking my thigh

 II. Kimura

III. Lapel Cross face, if i don't have Underhook, Reverse Sit/Switch Hips, Knee Cut

IV. Lapel Cross face 2, -- if he holds on tight to my Ankle: Switch hands on gi, reach back and lift top knee, and get Ankle free.

All 3 taps by Armbar -- need to upgrade my Armbar ESC ... rock/Bridge and get his legs up and light, then break his crossed legs, get my off hand on his ankle.

Black Rain, who used to be Purple Rain when i first met him, had nice tips for me: said i seemed fine, relaxed on Bottom, but was hesitant and unsure on Top. Need to drill Passing and Top game. Limit it to 3 Techs.

Passes:
1. back to Buchecha
2. Lo Torrenado
3. Sky Drag

Can't resist adding: Luta Floating because it's flashy.

Standing to Pass: couple of times, they underhooked my other ankle and passed my hand over that way for Omo ... possible to swing my left leg over for Step Over Pass? Or even a Leg Drag on same side leg?

17.62 Sunday Confessions OG OM 4178

Taps: 8. 4178.

Rolled with BB Tarca twice, that's where most of the taps came from. Brown Ray always letting me work my top game, and I got to work Keenan's Armbar bteak ... and it's a winner! This is my go-to.

Calling it Keenan's Twister Armbar Break - top hand under hooks the arm, bottom hand pulls both legs/kneee towards me to twist his body (takes away his bridge and his ability to scissor my head with his feet); S Mount with bottom leg, other leg lift off his head, puts weight all on his chest; if he's stilll holding his hands, get my leg over his head on other side of neck, pull in with leg - that torques his head, giving more leverage to arm break.

Backup with Silverado and Bicep Slicer Armbar breaks.

Work on - Judi roll and invert to spider web when getting stacked.
 Huni Sweep off Knee Shield.
 closed Guard/ Side Guard series.

A couple of Purples today seeme to be giving up, mentally giving my Brown belt too much credit. I've rolled with them in the past and they seemed to concede too easily. At my home academy, the Purples give me a hard time ... because half of them are competitors and the other half came up with me. So they know my Brown belt doesn't mean much and there isn't that big of a gap in skills.

Need to remind myself not to do that with Browns and BB that I roll with ... respect but do not fear them.

17.61 Saturday Breakie Club 4170

Taps: 5. Total: 4170.

Small crew, i think lots of regular crew at a tournament and supporting our competitors.

Roll call: 4 browns, Purple and 2 Blues.

BB Chris ... Closed Guard / Side Guard Series.

Nice,  the Basics.

I. from Closed Guard - Sweep
 1. left hand same side gi grip at wrist; right hand reaches under and goes cross grip on that same hand behind elbow.
 2. Left leg on him, pinch in -- bridge up and on the way down, bring his arm down to the right, across center line and get into Side Guard.
 3. Left hand reach over his shoulder, grab under his armpit, get my chest tight against his body and elbow so he can't get his arm out. Close my legs in Side Guard.
 4. Open legs, rock back and forth and Sweep to the Left.
var. Reverse shrimp to the right to make space for the Sweep.
var. 2 -- come up on my right elbow, Hip Bump to the right (if he doesn't resist, then Sweep to right); if he resists, use momentum for original Sweep to the Left.

II. Armbar
 1. Same all to step 4 above but can't get Sweep. Arch back to create space, reach in with my right hand, go over his bottom arm and trap that.
 2. When he postures to get space, throw my left leg over his head, arch back to Armbar his bottom arm.

III. Choke
 1. from Step 4. Reach over with left hand, two finger collar Choke grip.
 2. Get left over his back, reach with my right and grab that ankle with Choke for leverage and finish.

IV. Sweep 2 to Right.
 1. Left hand reaches in front of his face, grab behind his far elbow.
 2. Bump and twist into him for the Sweep.

Getting lazy, just pulling, defaulting to Half Guard. Then comes the battle of their Knee Cut vs my Underhook game, or my Giggler Sweep. But i have been slowing it down and getting to Knee Shield, but stuck there. Not sure what to do from Knee Shield. Huni Sweep, of course. Look that over.

Also, trying out that Frame ESC from Side Control. I'm doing something wrong. Framing but not quite getting my knee through to recover.

Thursday, June 22, 2017

17.60 Wed. Night 4165

Taps: 5. Total: 4165.

BB Chris ... Back Mount ESC.
 1. Two on one on the top choking hand.
 2. Saulo scoot scoot down.
 3. Kick out, clear one hook, get on side, kick out and clear other hook.
 4. Escape to the side choking hand is pointing / scoot out and step on/sit on that side leg.
 5. Let go top hand on choking hand, reach over and control hip/and top leg from coming over.
 6. Scoot back, back, come up in Reverse Kesa Side Control.

Roll call: Only a couple other Browns, besides me, lots of Whites, and tons of viciously tough Purples, majority of them competitors.

All five taps to BB Chris, who absolutely demolished me, as usual. His PRESSURE, though. During warmups, he saw me standing on sidelines.
 - You okay?
 - Just my knee.
 - What happened?
 - Kneebar.
 - Who did it?
He discourages Footlocks and Kneebars, etc and even has a sign up about it.
 - Not here, i said.

But glad i didn't have to name any names or point fingers. Not my style.

Work on:

1. Rodolfo half pass
2. Lepri knee cut, especially part about killing the Knee Shield.
3. Closed Guard / still don't have a GOTO. Work the Posture Break, then High Guard, and Lapel Guard, Sit Up Arm Drag to Bump and Scissor Triangle.

* Improve every session.
** Seek out the toughest guys.

Tuesday, June 20, 2017

Breakdown: Rodolfo's Half Pass to Mount Armbar

1. Cage his Hips: right elbow against his hip; left hand on his biceps and my left knee pinches in on other side of his hip.

2. Instead of Crossface:  Right hand on shoulder/bicep; Left hand gets Underhook, reaches up and lifts his hand/elbow and he can't pummel and grabs behind collar. My head starts below his, then moves up to the Right of his head.

3. Double Underhook: Right hand reaches in and gets Double Underhook and locks Padlock.
4. Pressure: Lean my head above his, apply pressure, get both his arms above his head, lift my butt in the air.

5. Mount: Left leg steps on same side thigh to open his legs and step into MOUNT.

6. High Mount: Gather both his arms in Padlocked, grabbing my own elbows, move my knees up high under his elbows.

7. S-Mount: Lift and bring him to one side; get on my right knee, bent left leg goes under his armpit, heel near his head and almost touching my other knee.

8. Finish: Lean forward, get my right leg over his head.

17.59 Sunday OG Om 4160

Taps: 5. Total: 4160.

Father's Day Roll ... someone put on an 80|/90s mix while we were rolling and it was distracting. First roll with BB Tarca and he's going for footlocks and Footloose is playing on the mix. He eventually gets me with a kneebar on my sore knee, then again with kneebar on other knee.

Rest of the rolls were acccompanied by Jesse's Girl and other songs like that.

Review: Lepri knee cut, Alberto knee slide, closed guard lapel attacks, hip bump-kimura-guillotine-crucifix-Triangle sequence, Bat choke and Kang choke, Godoi Loop.

Thursday, June 15, 2017

Breakdown: Far Side Knee Slide - Alberto Serrano

1. Grab bottom knee, pull him towards center and get his knees pointing up, then double collar control; pinch his knee with both of mine.
2. Right hand pushes his knee down and goes over, post right hand on mat.
3. Other knee comes in and weaves between his legs, knee on mat, Right foot posts out wide.
4. Right foot circles back and hooks his top leg; other leg that was Weaved in comes over his thigh in a Slide for the Pass.

Breakdown: Lucas Lepri Knee Cut Pass

starts 2:05 -- vs. DLR

1. Right hand (same side as DLR hook) grabs collar grip, and pulls his shoulder/back off the mat. Elbow bent, tight, push against DLR thigh.
2. Left hand pants grip, top of shin, step to the left and put his non-DLR foot on the mat and start Knee Cut.
3. (3:24) Keep him on his side, back off the mat, elbow closed to prevent Pummel/Underhook and Knee Shield; Left hand staples other leg on mat to prevent RDRL.
4. He will most likely frame with both hands on my shoulder, switch from leg grip to ELBOW of his bottom arm.
5. Lean forward, get my head over his head, and Knee Cut with Knee straight down on mat (NOT sliding down and away), then PIVOT with outside foot to complete PASS, and follow with my grips if he shrimps away.

5:00 Gets knee in for KNEE SHIELD
1. Control elbow again, push his chest, get him flat on his back, brings bottom leg up, both his knees pointing up, and my knee in between his legs.
2. Now there's space to get my Elbow back INSIDE to take away Knee Shield, then Knee Cut again, swivel, pivot.

17.58 Sunday OG OM 4155

Taps: 5. Total: 5155.

Purple Mike, who likes leglocks, also put his right foot up, but he wasn't using it to bait. He pushes forward or pulls back that leg and if i try to DLR hook it, he traps it for a footlock.

Anyway, i had moderate success using that to start my roll.

BB Tarca showed a cool Kneebar from Half top, where he Back Steps just a half a step, and weaves that foot between the guy's, then scoops the leg for Kneebar. Very nice. Wanna to try it.

Review:

Closed Guard ... lapel panza grip
Back Attack ... cannonball grip.
Turtle attack ... juji to spider web.
Half Pass ... Rodolfo smash.
Side escape ... different path

17.57 Saturday Breakfast Club 4150

Taps: 7. Total: 4150

BB Chris... Side Control Escape Series
 I. Basic prevent crossface, bridge and recover Guard
II. Get knee in, other leg over, then recover Guard
III. Throw leg over for Armbar
IV. Ghost escape into Darce choke

Could not get any offensive thing going. Defending the whole time. Purple David got his Lockdown working, need to address that. Watch my feet, getting lazy about defending the leg locks.

Rolling with BB Dean: he got a Kimura from Side, and transitioned to Paper Cutter Choke and I tapped but he held for a sec longer bc he didn't hear me and i could NOT move; i was awake and could see and I spasmed for about 5 seconds and then came out of it.

First time for Half Choked Out.

Nice roll with Brown Eddie, who BB Chris says is a Night Guy only. He had an interesting start to Roll game plan -- he started with Right Leg up in Combat Base, which left me only two choices: grab that for Single or DLR it. Interesting strategy. He's the one who got me with all the footlocks and Kneebars today.

Review: Graugart hop butterfly passs and Rodolfo Half Pass to Mount.

Sunday, June 4, 2017

17.56 Sunday Og OM 4143

Taps: 6. Total: 4143.

Asked Purple Brazilian Girl to show me her Mount Ezekiel.
 1. Get to High Mount, crossface with the Left hand.
 2. Get my face on right side of his head, side of my head to the cheek so he can't see what i'm doing.
 3. My right elbow clamps down over the shoulder and locks their arm down to their side, so he can't use that hand to defend.
 4. Get Ezekiel grip (right hand gets my left wrist gi, right hand blades, slides over the throat).

More Practice: Knee shield, prevent crossface; from Side, prevent crossface.

Revisit: Recovery Guard Drills, Butterfly Passes, Sit Up Esc from Side, Closed Guard Goto, X Guard Drills.

17.55 Saturday Breakfast Club 4137

Taps: 6. Total: 4137

22 people in class today and 1 White belt, who ended up being promoted to Blue before class ended. Three Blues, 4,5 Purple, 6, 7 Browns and 3 Black.

BB Chris... Side Attacks
 I. Let him turn away and come up into Turtle
 1. Into Clock Choke... flick of wrist on choking hand; heavy hip on near shoulder, other hand controls his far wrist

II. Modified Seatbelt control ... crossface hand controls his top wrist, my right hand grips my own crossface wrist
 1. Swivel my right knee behind his back, pull him over to the right and take Back and get my hooks in.
 2. Left hand gets collar grip, right hand pants grip, lean down into Bow and Arrow Choke.
 3. If he defends by get my choking hand over his head and in front of him, then switch to Armbar.

Brown Ryan and other browns sharing new control grip fro back, and for lack of a name, I will refer to it as Brown Straight Jacket ... from the Back -- left hand Underhooks and grabs far collar, Right hand grabs behind the neck.
Quite a tight control, just not sure where to transition to from there.

Reminder: Half Guard - knee shield and prevent crossface, Side control - prevent crossface.

Drill: swim move, sit outs.

17.54 Noho Memorial Day OM 4131

Taps: 4. Total: 4131.

BOOM! Four days straight in the books. Friday Night OM, Sat AM, Sun OM, Mon OM. Bam-Bam-Bam-Bam. That ties the record. Don't think i've ever trained more than four days straight.

Brown Steve owns the place and i was the highest belt there after him. No other Browns. Lots and lots Whites, three Blues, two Purples.

I had to really really remember to roll light and not bully the Whites and Blues, only if they are really big and heavy and strong. Otherwise, roll like they're my kids.

Plus, the Whites were in awe and giving me TOO MUCH RESPECT. I think it's because they've had not seen much Browns and above, other than their own instructor. like they said, in the kingdom of the Blind, the one-eyed man is King. Or on a mat full of White Belts, the Brown belt seems like a god.

At one point i was keeping up with Brown Steve and thought, o shit, what are you doing? Take it down a notch. It's his house. Kind of flashes back to the time i beat that guy at ping pong at his house. I really should have let him win, but I didn't.

I was really lazy with Half Guard, and I forgot to use my Knee Shield. But i could get away with it because they were mostly lower belts and i got the Underhook and they forgot to control my bottom arm and i swept them pretty easily.

Lanky, flexible Purple kept escaping Mount by inverting and hooking his legs on my armpits. Must ask Vince or Chris a counter to that.

Got to work on a few stuff ... Kob Backstep to Mount, Barata Control, Passing ... time lag getting shorter between Position and Goto technique.

Half Guard Passing: Lockdown, Knee Shield, Regular.
Top Side Control: Sub or Mount.
Mount: Armbar, Choke or Triangle.
Closed Guard: High Guard, Arm Drag to Side Guard/Back Take.

But, but roll lightly next time. No subs. Catch and release.

Sunday, May 28, 2017

17.53 Sunday Og OM 4127

Taps: 9. Total: 4127.

And three days in row training in the books.
There are some Browns I can hang with and there some Browns I can't even touch. There were a couple of each this morning.

Also, Purple Brazilian Girl, very technical, super nice -- she got me twice with Ezekiel from Mount. Nice set up and nice, tight progression to the finish. Kept her head low and tight next to my head on crossface side to hide what she was doing.

Rolled with Brown Steve 3 times. He also dropped serious gems of wisdom my way. Plus, he's my size and weight. Have a lot to learn from him, and I do pick up tons each time I roll with him, either directly or indirectly.
He grabs right at a precise spot on my elbow to torque it. Right angle and leverage on my weakest joint.
He said most people escape by scissoring their legs and coming up onto their knees, and that's what he tries to control and prevent.
His Jedi game is to shut down or catch people at certain things that they won't even try it on him anymore, they take techniques out of their toolbox.
My Half Guard -- I need to knee Shield, I'm getting flattened and then fishing for Underhook, much harder that way. Knee shield, frame with hands, kick out, then sit up into the Underhook.

Saturday, May 27, 2017

17.52 Saturday Breakfast Club 4118

Taps: 5. Total: 4118.

BB Chris ... I. DLR Pass
 1. Pants grip on non-dlr leg, other grips collar thumb in
  2. Pivot on front foot, back step, stiff arm with pants grip to release leg for pass.

II. Half Guard Pass A
 1. Crossface and Underhook, switch base to sit on left hip, keep crossface, left leg tucks under, right hand grips top knee.
 2. Stiff arm with right hand as I scoot back towards his head, and get ready to back step to get my right leg out if he tries to bridge and sweep, opening his legs.

III. HG Pass B - if you can't get leg out, Knee Cut Far Side
 1. Stiff arm to get just my right knee above his leg, then onto the mat on the right far side
 2. Sit back to get room to get double biceps control (I actually prefer getting Near Side Underhook), hard down on far side.
 3. Bring knee and hip down over to right side for Knee Cut.

Brown po po Freddie got me with straight footlock and Chris showed me defense, which I knew but forgot in heat of roll: Boot in, toes toward me, push down his bottom foot, sit on top, then come up.

Brown Ryan was showing a Single Leg Counter when other guy is Turtled and grabs a leg -- roll into an Omoplata, then let him turn back into Triangle.

Faria Over/Under, X Pass, Octopus, Back esc, Waiter sweep from Closed Guard when he stands.

Friday, May 26, 2017

17.51 Friday Night Lights OM 4113

Taps: 4. Total: 4113.

Friday Night Lights at home base. Switching it up, now that the Summer work sched has kicked in, can't do the Tue/Thur AM rotation anymore. Have to come in on midweek nights and Sat/Sun only.

Only two other guys, Brn Garrett and Purple Pete, who is one of two sons of celebrities training at the school. So roll call would be: one celeb, two sons of celebs, a rabbi, a po po, two bakers, a chef and a partridge in a pear tree. Shame, very few women.

Only got about five rolls in, in just under an hour. More people, i would have been there for over two hours. Perhaps blessing because i'm planning on back to back to back, Friday-Sat-Sun training this long weekend. Probably good to start slow and easy.

Haven't rolled with Brn Garrett for a year or two. He's more a night guy. He killed my Half Guard Game with his Knee Cut, but i had more success with Pete, even getting a Giggler Sweep. It was all or nothing with my Half Guard game lately. Brown and up just destroy it, although the Simi Blues did, too.

Garrett also played a nice Lockdown, swept me twice from there. Need to look at M. Arroyo's Lockdown Pass and Junior's Hug Pass, too.

Also, be more slow and methodical on my Passing. Not much luck with Over/Under, should have switched to Buchecha Pass or Leg Drag or Lo Torreando.

17.50 Simi OM 4109 and the Rope Climb

Taps: 6. Total: 4109.

Man, got crushed. Need to get myself up to Simi more often. Ego got crunched. Getting complacent. Blues, Purples, and couple of Browns. Actually the Brown belts didn't go that hard. And Purp Zach has gotten new freakin tricks in his bag.

Started with BB Kenny ... new wrinkle to his Omoplata -- he hooks my leg with his, takes away a lot of my escapes.

Then Brown Sky ... he went easy on me but eventually still got me an Omoplata to Triangle, then Armbar.

Next, a Super heavy Purple, and a couple of Blues, Machado Brown, tricky Purple Zach -- i kept ending up in his Quarter Guard ... i got to Side and as soon as I Mount, he grabs my far ankle and stuffs it into Quarter Guard ... and i forgot about BB Chris' tip of heavy hips, sliding my hips down to the mat, but Zach also suggested Near Underhook and Far Side Knee Cut. duh.

One of the Blues was doing a lot of Knee Cutting, and when he Knee Cut with his Other foot (Left) forward, and I got into my off-side Half Guard, i had a hard time stopping his Knee Cut.

Purple Doyle ... wicked Lasso Sweep, and I remember him getting it on me before. Work on the Lasso Pass.

BB Kenny again. High Guard, defending the Triangle and he gets Knee grip and easily Flower Sweeps me, just effortless. I have to put that into my game when I get to High Guard.

Finished with a Rope Climb ... a few succeeded to the top, a few didn't. No pressure. Didn't have to it. But I wanted to but was afraid of embarrassment and making a fool of myself. I've never tried before. FEAR talking and i was listening.

Then i thought i should try new things. Don't worry about the result. Failure or Success, at least i can say i tried. So i did and i made it to the TOP. With my gi on.

I have to do this with other parts of my life. Don't listen to FEAR. Ignore it. Try new things.

BB Chris knows ...

BB Chris is the owner and head instructor at my academy. The man has competed in Brazil way way back in the day. There is a photos of him with GM Helio.

He is human. He has his flaws, but I am really lucky to have him as my instructor. In so many ways.

He knows. i'm not sure how but I try to cheat and miss some promotions but he knows. He catches me up down the line, "skips" a couple of stripes and promotes me anyway.

Thursday, May 18, 2017

17.49 Thur AM 4103

Taps: 2. Total: 4103.

BB Chris ...

Torreado Drill > KoB>Double KoB, both hands on his knees>Back Step Mount

Side Control Drill ... he turns in or gets Underhook, Elbow down, back step to other side.

and I'm thinking about Cobrinha's Drill. These two should be my bread and butter for Side Control Maintenance.

* Pulling Far Elbow up and my elbow across his Chest.

Side to Mount Transitions:

I. from Tues / from Reverse Kesa - Step over bind the far thigh

II. if he puts near Knee up (foot on far knee), PUSH knee down to far side of mat, when he comes back, step over into Mount

III. if he puts far Knee up (far foot on near knee), PULL that knee close to me, down to mat, Step over into Mount.

IV. if he puts BOTH knees up, the grab my own foot, and poke/snake it through to Mount.

Also like the Ninja Mount Entries.

Armbar Breaks from Spider Web / need to master these two.

I. Switch to Farside Armbar

BB Chris' version had a couple of different details:
   1. like the vid he gathers up the far elbow with the bottom arm, then switches to the top arm: top arm weaves inside out to the far elbow.
   2. bottom arm grabs far knee, and lift up to S Mount and Swivels into Armbar.

II. Armbar Break, Near Arm
 1. this time, bottom hand goes under to attack the arm;
 2. top hand pushes his elbow into my armpit, so my elbow is right on top of his elbow and torques his elbow away from me but his hand/wrist is coming towards me.
 3. Bottom hand gets under the WRIST of my arm i'm attacking; my top hand Kimura grips his hand, leans in towards his hand for the Break.

DLR to Omoplata to Lift off Omoplata from Tues.

Bonus: Turtle Turnover to Back Take.
 1. in KoB position, right knee against his hip and on mat, left leg based out wide against his Turtle.
 2. Right hand reaches over his hip and grabs his near gi at the bottom (his stomach level); left hand grabs his gi at near elbow.
 3. Switch my base, get my left ankle over his near ankle as i pull with right hand and my left hand punches forward on his elbow grip, turning him over and taking the Back and get my hooks in and choking hand across his neck.

Simple. Easy. i've forgotten about this. Need to put in back into Top Shelf of my Toolbox.

Rolling notes: only 2 taps? Hmmmn. Almost a third, but saved by bell.
I thought i was going easy and didn't roll that much but actually ...
 1. Brn Gilles ... light roll.
 2. Brn Freddy (tap)
 3. BB Steve
 4. WB Jamie
 5. Blue Shane, or some other lower belt
 6. Brn Chris (tap)
 7, Brn Jason

So i rolled with all four Brown Belts and one BB.

Closed Guard -- got to High Guard using the Lapel. Could not get Armbar. Forgot about the Flower Sweep. Maybe try Hip Bump?

Also, Brabo series - Cavaca and Beleza.

Closed Guard, he stands ... hard time with Omoplata Sweep, try transitioning to X Guard.

Tuesday, May 16, 2017

 a. Same side sleeve and Cross Collar Grip, pull collar grip and make him post his hand on mat.
 b. Omoplata, and he rolls.
 c. Back Step into Mount, and Omoplata on that side.

III. Closed Guard to Open, Half Spider Scissor Sweep.
 a. Double Sleeve grip, weave knee in on both sides and get his hands on Outside of my knees.
 b. Hip out a bit to the right, get on my left hip.
 c. Right foot on his bicep, Left foot blocks his knee on the left side.
 d. Extend Spider leg on his bicep to Sweep him to the left.

 i. Get heavy over my Underhook.
ii. If Quarter Guard, get the Knee Slide hip down onto the mat.

Work on:
  A. Frame and Re-Guard.
  B. Baroplata Guard / Reverse Kimura from Closed Guard.

17.47 Sunday Open / 4100

Taps: 0. Total: 4100.

BB Tarca showing us the Baraplata ... from Closed Guard, which looks very similar to Reverse Kimura grip, have to check both and compare.

Also, Spider Web to Lift up, Baroplata twist crush. Bottom arm weaves in and lift up, hand on my thigh or chin, and twist/torque.

Brn Jack showed a Footlock Counter, reaching under the leg and hugging, slicer.

Also, Brn David had another defense to Footlock -- Crossing the foot, making an X to prevent the guy from getting underneath the heel, that gives you time to attack his foot, assuming he hasn't X'd his legs.

I asked Blue Sunland Guy about the Turtle to Juji from Side Control, and he says it's Renzo on YT, but i've only seen him show it from head on Turtle, not from the Side. Makes sense you can do it from either.

Owe Sean R. $3 more for hitting the Giggler. Hit KoB Back Step to Mount a couple of times. Keep that in the rotation. Do more KoB drills.
