Mind Map - Half Guard Passing

I. With Right Underhook - Pass Left side
 A. Standard Knee Cut (both very similiar)
    1. Tripod Pass (GGP)
    2. Foot Wedge (Scully)

II. Can't Get Underhook, he gets Underhook - Pass Left side
 A. Reverse Sit (GGP)

III. No Underhook, vs. Knee Shield
 A. Leg Weave
     1. Knee Slice (Mendes)
     2. Knee Shield Pass (Terere)
     3. Flatten, Knee in, Hip Twist (Lil Bro)
 B. Mat Punch, front of his legs, Knee Cut (Cyborg)

  A. vs. Knee Shield / Fake Knee Cut, Switch/Hop to Right side (D. Avellan)
  B. Get Left Underhook (knee cut to other side)
     1. Fantasma Pass (D. Avellan) with or without Right Overhook.
     2. Criss Cross (Penn var.)

V. Adv. Fancy ... Rolling Back Take (R. Hall)
   * Never tried in live rolling yet. Need to drill it before I do.

VI. Vs. Deep Half -- needs separate mini Mind Map.

VII. Vs. Lockdown - needs separate mini Mind Map.

Taps: 969 and JJ League Open Mat 2

Taps: 4. Total: 969.

All super nice there. Also, there were 5 women at the Open Mat. Really wished our own one woman had that many women training partners.

Sitting and Shin Guard - kept confusing the two and not using the appropriate technique for each. For Sitting and wrapping their lead leg, need to come up into Single; for Shin Guard, get the floss gi grip, back up and get my shin in front against his shin, control far arm, then sweep or go under and sweep. Black Chris showed these; need to look back in my posts.

On my mind:
1. Gi Brabo Choke from Side.
2. Roussey Armbar
3. Renzo Armbar vs. Turtle (similar to Roussey's)
4. Ezekiel - from Side and vs. Turtle.
5. Shaolin and Tails Sweep.

Taps: 965 and the 300th Post

Taps: 3. Total: 965.

Black Vince -- Over/Under Pass and Double Under Pass.
* Under and other pants grip, staple ankle and bring other knee into middle to Knee Cut.

** If he gets on his side, go for Double Under, Stack, then bring him onto my thighs, getting his hips way off the mat.

Mild success with Wiener Bow and Arrow choke counter to Deep Half.

Fail on Saulo's Armbar Esc - went the wrong way.

On my Mind:
Deep Half - B. Faria and Kurt O.
Ezekiel from Turtle and Side. -- Keenan, Dennis, etc.
Arm Triangle.

Tuesday, January 21, 2014

Taps: 962

Taps: 4. Total: 962.

Black Vince -- Top Side Maintenance -- going from Kesa, step over his head, other side Side Control; Armbar.

Black Chris -- tech 1 --  from Closed Guard, failed Hip Bump to Guillotine.
tech 2 -- Closed Guard Pass, low if he grabs a knee, use gi to trap that hand, pass gi under him; slide over, into Side to Brabo like choke with my own gi over top of his neck, not behind like the Brabo I saw.

Techs to Review:
1. Deep Half Killer Choke - Wiener.
2. Arm Triangle
3. Ezekiel from Half -- Keenan and Dennis A.
4. 2 on 1 Standing Pass -- GGP and Mahalo Pass - Marshal C.
5. Finish the Armbar ESC -- Saulo.

Also, need to drill the slide movement -- leading with my Right Knee Cut, to cut across his thigh.

Love the Penn Criss Cross Half Pass -- works well against the upper belts, and people who won't let my get the Underhook on the right side. I just get Underhook on the left side, put my head down on the right, push his right knee (that's trapping my leg) down on mat; come up on my left leg, knee cut/slide my left knee across his body to the right for the pass. Sweet!.

Lovato's Side ESC Breakdown

1. My near hand (right) against his hip.
2. My left hand inside, under his armpit, elbow against his neck.
3. Both knees up, feet on mat, together, then move away from him, then Bridge.
    a. Near knee (left) down on mat (like i'm gonna get that knee in), shrimp away.
    b. bring my head under him.
    c. get top knee IN.
    d. my right hand on his forearm to prevent him getting crossface again.
    e. switch hands, left hand now on the forearm, right elbow on the mat to come up.

4a. Pull that forearm sleeve across my body to the left to Re-Guard.
4b. Roll over my left shoulder into Guard or if he's grabbing a leg grip, break grip and into a Triangle.

BJJ and Learning Styles

I'm reading Ken Robinson's Finding Your Element, and he talks briefly about Learning Styles and it made me think about BJJ and learning, and he's right. You need to know your learning style and gravitate towards it.

I remember I was paired with Brown Chris, who was a Purple Belt at the time. He's super-nice, helpful, small-statured, weighs about 130, and he's always injured so he can't really roll that hard. Anyway, Black Chris was showing a technique and I was surprised that Chris, a Purple, didn't pick up all the steps to the move. At the time, I thought, like an idiot, that he was not that smart. I was wrong. He has a different way of learning. He was more hands-on, rather than visual or aural.

VARK -- visual, aural, read/write, kinesthetic ... I'm all of these, except aural. Because I have bad hearing. I'm a strong read/write learner, and equally visual and kinesthetic, but I'm going to take the online test and see for sure.

The VARK Questionnaire Results
Your scores were:
  • Visual: 10
  • Aural: 3
  • Read/Write: 15
  • Kinesthetic: 11
As I suspected.

When I Knew I was Hooked on BJJ

I was a White Belt, one stripe at the time. One stripe because I started at Beverly Hills BJJ 10 years previously, and was able to get about three months training before I got injured and moved.

Ten years past, I'm married, two kids and I start BJJ again. There's a Crossfit place near my house, which has BJJ. The only class I can take is taught by a Purple Belt, and usually it's just me and him. Lately, there's another White Belt. He's strong and spazzy, like most White belts.

So I'm rolling with the White Belt and he's on top of Half Guard. I'm stuck and getting smashed, and I'm holding onto his leg with all I've got, and it hits me that I may not know any Half Guard escapes or sweeps, but I do know one Mount Escape -- the Bridge and Roll. So...

I release his leg and LET HIM get to Mount, and as soon has he does, I trap a leg and grab his same side arm, and bridge and reverse him! This takes less than a second. Sweet!

That's when I knew I was hooked on this BJJ stuff.

Taps 958 and Simi Valley Open Mat 2

Taps: 10. Total: 958.

So the Kid, Blue Sky, I call him. He's same rank as me (Blue, three Stripes), but he's a freak. I saw him tap higher belts like it was nothing. He's got a super tight all-around game. Good guard, good passing, and excellent subs from the Back.

Last time, he subbed me six times in one row. This time, only 5, like I predicted. And each time, I will get closer and closer to not getting subbed at all.

He also had a sweet, Shin Cut re-direct move, kind of like this vid.

Unlike the vid, he showed it to me a little higher, with the opponents legs both still up, and not smashed down. I am definitely drilling this.

Then there was Blue Zach. He got me with a Baseball Choke from Side Control with Lapel, and it was a nice setup that I've not seen before. He said it was a Kurt O. special and I have not been able to find it. Need to ask him to show it to me again or send me a link. Basically, from Side, use opp's label and grab with my hand (can't remember which), move almost N/S, then come back for the finish. I think the second hand goes behind his head.

Lastly, KoB Basic ESC I saw. Grab under his knee, grab his belt at back, while I trap his ankle. Other hand grabs his collar at the chest, bridge and sweep.

Misc -- Cross Collar Choke Basics from Rylan Lizares. Couple of notes.
1. Hand placement - first hand under, second over, then over grip; under then under grip.
2. Head - down on the mat side of the top hand.

Taps: 948

Taps: 5. Total: 948.

BB Vince showed two Half Passes. 1. Get space and wrap his knees together; 2. vs. High Knee shield, smash his knee down and go to the back side.

BB Chris showed Hip Toss Takedown (Ippon Seoi  Nage)

Techs on my mind:

1. Roger's Closed Guard.
2. Shaolin Half Sweep (need to break down) - 50% success rate.
3. Criss cross Half Pass (break down) -- pulled it off on lower belt; not on higher belt.
4. Half Guard bottom in general.
5. DLR Pass from Saulo.
6. Loop choke.

Taps: 943 and the Third Stripe, Blue

Taps: 7. Total: 943.

Got the Third Stripe on my Blue Belt. In no hurry. Just a slow, bumpy, not so easy ride. Is what I'm thinking. Take my time, enjoy the ride.

BB Vince showed a Top Half control, where you triangle the leg and put pressure.

BB Chris showed a simple Takedown off single Underhook.
 a. Pummel the other side and shuck and get behind, then to the side and sit down as I straighten one leg behind him.

What's on my Mind -- Armbars.

Spin-Out drill.

Keenan's Advanced Armbar off a Kimura grip.

and Two Passes.
1. Butterfly Pass / Knee Cut. by Marcos Avellan.
2. Criss Cross Penn Pass -- which passes to the other side.
