17.54 Noho Memorial Day OM 4131

Taps: 4. Total: 4131.

BOOM! Four days straight in the books. Friday Night OM, Sat AM, Sun OM, Mon OM. Bam-Bam-Bam-Bam. That ties the record. Don't think i've ever trained more than four days straight.

Brown Steve owns the place and i was the highest belt there after him. No other Browns. Lots and lots Whites, three Blues, two Purples.

I had to really really remember to roll light and not bully the Whites and Blues, only if they are really big and heavy and strong. Otherwise, roll like they're my kids.

Plus, the Whites were in awe and giving me TOO MUCH RESPECT. I think it's because they've had not seen much Browns and above, other than their own instructor. like they said, in the kingdom of the Blind, the one-eyed man is King. Or on a mat full of White Belts, the Brown belt seems like a god.

At one point i was keeping up with Brown Steve and thought, o shit, what are you doing? Take it down a notch. It's his house. Kind of flashes back to the time i beat that guy at ping pong at his house. I really should have let him win, but I didn't.

I was really lazy with Half Guard, and I forgot to use my Knee Shield. But i could get away with it because they were mostly lower belts and i got the Underhook and they forgot to control my bottom arm and i swept them pretty easily.

Lanky, flexible Purple kept escaping Mount by inverting and hooking his legs on my armpits. Must ask Vince or Chris a counter to that.

Got to work on a few stuff ... Kob Backstep to Mount, Barata Control, Passing ... time lag getting shorter between Position and Goto technique.

Half Guard Passing: Lockdown, Knee Shield, Regular.
Top Side Control: Sub or Mount.
Mount: Armbar, Choke or Triangle.
Closed Guard: High Guard, Arm Drag to Side Guard/Back Take.

But, but roll lightly next time. No subs. Catch and release.

17.53 Sunday Og OM 4127

Taps: 9. Total: 4127.

And three days in row training in the books.
There are some Browns I can hang with and there some Browns I can't even touch. There were a couple of each this morning.

Also, Purple Brazilian Girl, very technical, super nice -- she got me twice with Ezekiel from Mount. Nice set up and nice, tight progression to the finish. Kept her head low and tight next to my head on crossface side to hide what she was doing.

Rolled with Brown Steve 3 times. He also dropped serious gems of wisdom my way. Plus, he's my size and weight. Have a lot to learn from him, and I do pick up tons each time I roll with him, either directly or indirectly.
He grabs right at a precise spot on my elbow to torque it. Right angle and leverage on my weakest joint.
He said most people escape by scissoring their legs and coming up onto their knees, and that's what he tries to control and prevent.
His Jedi game is to shut down or catch people at certain things that they won't even try it on him anymore, they take techniques out of their toolbox.
My Half Guard -- I need to knee Shield, I'm getting flattened and then fishing for Underhook, much harder that way. Knee shield, frame with hands, kick out, then sit up into the Underhook.

17.52 Saturday Breakfast Club 4118

Taps: 5. Total: 4118.

BB Chris ... I. DLR Pass
 1. Pants grip on non-dlr leg, other grips collar thumb in
  2. Pivot on front foot, back step, stiff arm with pants grip to release leg for pass.

II. Half Guard Pass A
 1. Crossface and Underhook, switch base to sit on left hip, keep crossface, left leg tucks under, right hand grips top knee.
 2. Stiff arm with right hand as I scoot back towards his head, and get ready to back step to get my right leg out if he tries to bridge and sweep, opening his legs.

III. HG Pass B - if you can't get leg out, Knee Cut Far Side
 1. Stiff arm to get just my right knee above his leg, then onto the mat on the right far side
 2. Sit back to get room to get double biceps control (I actually prefer getting Near Side Underhook), hard down on far side.
 3. Bring knee and hip down over to right side for Knee Cut.

Brown po po Freddie got me with straight footlock and Chris showed me defense, which I knew but forgot in heat of roll: Boot in, toes toward me, push down his bottom foot, sit on top, then come up.

Brown Ryan was showing a Single Leg Counter when other guy is Turtled and grabs a leg -- roll into an Omoplata, then let him turn back into Triangle.

Faria Over/Under, X Pass, Octopus, Back esc, Waiter sweep from Closed Guard when he stands.

17.51 Friday Night Lights OM 4113

Taps: 4. Total: 4113.

Friday Night Lights at home base. Switching it up, now that the Summer work sched has kicked in, can't do the Tue/Thur AM rotation anymore. Have to come in on midweek nights and Sat/Sun only.

Only two other guys, Brn Garrett and Purple Pete, who is one of two sons of celebrities training at the school. So roll call would be: one celeb, two sons of celebs, a rabbi, a po po, two bakers, a chef and a partridge in a pear tree. Shame, very few women.

Only got about five rolls in, in just under an hour. More people, i would have been there for over two hours. Perhaps blessing because i'm planning on back to back to back, Friday-Sat-Sun training this long weekend. Probably good to start slow and easy.

Haven't rolled with Brn Garrett for a year or two. He's more a night guy. He killed my Half Guard Game with his Knee Cut, but i had more success with Pete, even getting a Giggler Sweep. It was all or nothing with my Half Guard game lately. Brown and up just destroy it, although the Simi Blues did, too.

Garrett also played a nice Lockdown, swept me twice from there. Need to look at M. Arroyo's Lockdown Pass and Junior's Hug Pass, too.

Also, be more slow and methodical on my Passing. Not much luck with Over/Under, should have switched to Buchecha Pass or Leg Drag or Lo Torreando.

17.50 Simi OM 4109 and the Rope Climb

Taps: 6. Total: 4109.

Man, got crushed. Need to get myself up to Simi more often. Ego got crunched. Getting complacent. Blues, Purples, and couple of Browns. Actually the Brown belts didn't go that hard. And Purp Zach has gotten new freakin tricks in his bag.

Started with BB Kenny ... new wrinkle to his Omoplata -- he hooks my leg with his, takes away a lot of my escapes.

Then Brown Sky ... he went easy on me but eventually still got me an Omoplata to Triangle, then Armbar.

Next, a Super heavy Purple, and a couple of Blues, Machado Brown, tricky Purple Zach -- i kept ending up in his Quarter Guard ... i got to Side and as soon as I Mount, he grabs my far ankle and stuffs it into Quarter Guard ... and i forgot about BB Chris' tip of heavy hips, sliding my hips down to the mat, but Zach also suggested Near Underhook and Far Side Knee Cut. duh.

One of the Blues was doing a lot of Knee Cutting, and when he Knee Cut with his Other foot (Left) forward, and I got into my off-side Half Guard, i had a hard time stopping his Knee Cut.

Purple Doyle ... wicked Lasso Sweep, and I remember him getting it on me before. Work on the Lasso Pass.

BB Kenny again. High Guard, defending the Triangle and he gets Knee grip and easily Flower Sweeps me, just effortless. I have to put that into my game when I get to High Guard.

Finished with a Rope Climb ... a few succeeded to the top, a few didn't. No pressure. Didn't have to it. But I wanted to but was afraid of embarrassment and making a fool of myself. I've never tried before. FEAR talking and i was listening.

Then i thought i should try new things. Don't worry about the result. Failure or Success, at least i can say i tried. So i did and i made it to the TOP. With my gi on.

I have to do this with other parts of my life. Don't listen to FEAR. Ignore it. Try new things.

BB Chris knows ...

BB Chris is the owner and head instructor at my academy. The man has competed in Brazil way way back in the day. There is a photos of him with GM Helio.

He is human. He has his flaws, but I am really lucky to have him as my instructor. In so many ways.

He knows. i'm not sure how but I try to cheat and miss some promotions but he knows. He catches me up down the line, "skips" a couple of stripes and promotes me anyway.

17.49 Thur AM 4103

Taps: 2. Total: 4103.

BB Chris ...

Torreado Drill > KoB>Double KoB, both hands on his knees>Back Step Mount

Side Control Drill ... he turns in or gets Underhook, Elbow down, back step to other side.

and I'm thinking about Cobrinha's Drill. These two should be my bread and butter for Side Control Maintenance.

* Pulling Far Elbow up and my elbow across his Chest.

Side to Mount Transitions:

I. from Tues / from Reverse Kesa - Step over bind the far thigh

II. if he puts near Knee up (foot on far knee), PUSH knee down to far side of mat, when he comes back, step over into Mount

III. if he puts far Knee up (far foot on near knee), PULL that knee close to me, down to mat, Step over into Mount.

IV. if he puts BOTH knees up, the grab my own foot, and poke/snake it through to Mount.

Also like the Ninja Mount Entries.

Armbar Breaks from Spider Web / need to master these two.

I. Switch to Farside Armbar

BB Chris' version had a couple of different details:
   1. like the vid he gathers up the far elbow with the bottom arm, then switches to the top arm: top arm weaves inside out to the far elbow.
   2. bottom arm grabs far knee, and lift up to S Mount and Swivels into Armbar.

II. Armbar Break, Near Arm
 1. this time, bottom hand goes under to attack the arm;
 2. top hand pushes his elbow into my armpit, so my elbow is right on top of his elbow and torques his elbow away from me but his hand/wrist is coming towards me.
 3. Bottom hand gets under the WRIST of my arm i'm attacking; my top hand Kimura grips his hand, leans in towards his hand for the Break.

DLR to Omoplata to Lift off Omoplata from Tues.

Bonus: Turtle Turnover to Back Take.
 1. in KoB position, right knee against his hip and on mat, left leg based out wide against his Turtle.
 2. Right hand reaches over his hip and grabs his near gi at the bottom (his stomach level); left hand grabs his gi at near elbow.
 3. Switch my base, get my left ankle over his near ankle as i pull with right hand and my left hand punches forward on his elbow grip, turning him over and taking the Back and get my hooks in and choking hand across his neck.

Simple. Easy. i've forgotten about this. Need to put in back into Top Shelf of my Toolbox.

Rolling notes: only 2 taps? Hmmmn. Almost a third, but saved by bell.
I thought i was going easy and didn't roll that much but actually ...
 1. Brn Gilles ... light roll.
 2. Brn Freddy (tap)
 3. BB Steve
 4. WB Jamie
 5. Blue Shane, or some other lower belt
 6. Brn Chris (tap)
 7, Brn Jason

So i rolled with all four Brown Belts and one BB.

Closed Guard -- got to High Guard using the Lapel. Could not get Armbar. Forgot about the Flower Sweep. Maybe try Hip Bump?

Also, Brabo series - Cavaca and Beleza.

Closed Guard, he stands ... hard time with Omoplata Sweep, try transitioning to X Guard.

17.48 Tue Am 4101

Taps: 1. Total: 4101

BB Chris ...

I. Three man drills ... Inverted Triangle and Armbar

II. DLR to Omoplata
 a. Same side sleeve and Cross Collar Grip, pull collar grip and make him post his hand on mat.
 b. Omoplata, and he rolls.
 c. Back Step into Mount, and Omoplata on that side.

III. Closed Guard to Open, Half Spider Scissor Sweep.
 a. Double Sleeve grip, weave knee in on both sides and get his hands on Outside of my knees.
 b. Hip out a bit to the right, get on my left hip.
 c. Right foot on his bicep, Left foot blocks his knee on the left side.
 d. Extend Spider leg on his bicep to Sweep him to the left.

IV. Mount --A. Swim move vs. Chest push / B. Armbar

V. Side to Mount Drill
 a. Top hand over the head, bottom hand checking his hip
 b. Reverse Kesa left knee pressed against the guy's hip.
 c. Right leg kicks over his far knee, gathers it in to Mount.
 d. Dismount to Side on other side and Repeat.

VI. Drill
 a. Torreando>Knee on Belly>Double Knee>Back Step Mount>Step off to Side Control.

BB Chris watching me roll and i guess he saw me using Half Guard Underhook alot and decided to coach my partners to how to kill my Underhook. Totally killing my game.
 i. Get heavy over my Underhook.
ii. If Quarter Guard, get the Knee Slide hip down onto the mat.

Work on:
  A. Frame and Re-Guard.
  B. Baroplata Guard / Reverse Kimura from Closed Guard.
  C. Octopus Guard

Sunday, May 14, 2017

17.47 Sunday Open / 4100

Taps: 0. Total: 4100.

BB Tarca showing us the Baraplata ... from Closed Guard, which looks very similar to Reverse Kimura grip, have to check both and compare.

Also, Spider Web to Lift up, Baroplata twist crush. Bottom arm weaves in and lift up, hand on my thigh or chin, and twist/torque.

Brn Jack showed a Footlock Counter, reaching under the leg and hugging, slicer.

Also, Brn David had another defense to Footlock -- Crossing the foot, making an X to prevent the guy from getting underneath the heel, that gives you time to attack his foot, assuming he hasn't X'd his legs.

I asked Blue Sunland Guy about the Turtle to Juji from Side Control, and he says it's Renzo on YT, but i've only seen him show it from head on Turtle, not from the Side. Makes sense you can do it from either.

Owe Sean R. $3 more for hitting the Giggler. Hit KoB Back Step to Mount a couple of times. Keep that in the rotation. Do more KoB drills.

KoB>Reverse KoB>Back Step Mount

Mount>Dismount KoB other side>repeat top pattern

17.46 Saturday Breakfast Club 4100,

Taps: 4. Total: 4100.

BB Chris ... inverted drills to Triangle.
II. Lasso to Balloon Sweep. Need the guy's head directly over my head, and Lasso foot really presses into his hip.

Rolled with all four BB in the house, with Dean twice.

Trying Wardinski Butterfly game into my rolls, learning curve.

Lots of people going Negative Half same side without step over, killing my Octopus, need to work on the Leite Roll into that he pulled off on Xande, and in a seminar which I need to dig up.

17.45 Sunday Confessions 4096

Taps: 3. Total: 4096.

Felt weird since i missed both Thursday and Saturday training. Felt like an off week when I get to train only two days (Sat, Sun) rather than the normal Tue, Thur, Sat, Sun On Week.

Still had some good rolls.

Over/Under Passing not so good against upper belts like BB Tarca and Brn Steve ... not enough shoulder pressure, and not good control on the over leg. They keep re-pummeling the leg in.

Purp Mike was there again. I've rolled with him at Steve's place and it was about a month before I got my Brown. He goes all leglock and kneebars and subs me about three, four times. So last week, I see him at Sunday Confessions and roll with him as Brown and we stalemate, but he didn't go for any leglocks or kneebars, so I was thinking maybe i was thinking about the wrong guy.
Nope. This morning he reverted to form and went for footlocks and wristlocks. I defended all his footlocks, but he did transition into a fast kneebar which I tapped to immediately.

Random Blue one stripe ... very chill roll. Love rolls like that. Almost a flow roll. He was so chill i was just matching his energy and pace.

Purp Shane, a wrestler ... completely the opposite energy. he's starting to use more technique but completely not chill. he grips really hard, etc.

Purp Kris ... had to laugh because he countered my Armdrag and hook swept me. i was going for my bait the right hand sleeve grip, give it to him and move it across my body, bringing his hand along and Arm drag that hand, but ...

Apparently there was a D'Arce Seminar during the week, so three different guys tried to D'arce me. They all got there but could not finish. I think Purp Alan was bummed he could not finish me. But what did he expect? One seminar and he gets to tap people? A Brown belt no less. I tried to encourage him to say that it's a work in progress and it's not going to happen all at once. He did well to get to step one, to get into the D'arce, and now he can work on the finish.

Brn Steve ... man, his transitions are so good. he's always a couple steps ahead. He counters my Leg Trap Armbar Escape by extending his leg and Taking my Back. With him it was just back and forth from Fire into Frying pan ... escape one bad position into another bad position. Escape Armbar to having my Back taken ... he said i needed to create room, move was with my lower body.

Tuesday, May 2, 2017

17.44 Tues Am 4093

Taps: 5. Total: 4093.

BB Mike ... Passing Drills x 5
 1. Torreando
 2. Hop Overs
 3. Knee Cut
 4. Leg Drag
 5. Step Overs

BB Vince ... Knee Shield Pass tip ... get my Knee up, re-direct. Saw DeBlass doing this, not the redirect but getting his knee up.

Vince tip #2: Seat Belt -- Underhook hand holds gi and passes it over Choking Hand. Even if he defends the choking hand, hard to stop the passing over the gi.

Working the KB lapel Closed Guard to Omoplata, but didn't get there, getting the Arm Across instead.

Getting the juji, too, need to work the Armbar Breaks.

Work the Heli Sweep.

Getting so sick of Purp Morgan getting Side Control and getting the gi wrap Kimura control on me. And he escapes Side Control by push on my chest/collar away. Dammit!!
