Taps: 775

Taps: 7. Total: 775.

Turtle to Re-Guard Drill (add to drill list).
1. I turtle to prevent Pass, he's over my right shoulder 3 o'clock.
2. I push into him with my right shoulder to create a little space, shoot my right hand under my left armpit.
3. Shoulder roll and get him in my Guard.

Tech - Ankle Riva/Gi wrap Guard (review from last class)
1. Left ankle inside of his right ankle; Sit up and gi grip around that right leg; right leg on his left hip or thigh and stretch him; my right hand pulls down on his collar.
2. If he bases up, dive under and go Deep Half and come out the back and ankle/knee tap takedown.

Rolling with Black Chris (owner/instructor) -- obvious but he's a few steps ahead of me. He has a grip, I break grip but was surprised that he didn't fight it. He just let go and moved on quickly to the next step  -- which I was not ready for.

Rolling with a strong White Belt - bump sweep fail, kimura fail. But realized much later I have to start putting Ryan Hall's Bump to Triangle into my toolbox. And here's also two shorter versions.

Blue, Two Stripes - Taps 765

Taps: 3. Total: 765 -- and received my Second Stripe on my Blue Belt.

Tech -- all Half Guard Sweep Series.

I. (w/ Underhook), Foot Grab Sweep 1.
1. Prevent crossface by having my right hand on his left biceps; left hand has underhook and grabbing his belt at his back. Dive between his legs and grab foot of his free leg (left).
2. Swing my legs with his trapped leg over to the left, bringing him over me, and passing his foot from my right hand to my left; and my right hand cups under his knee, taking out his base.
3. Right leg still has his leg trapped; bridge with my left leg over to the right.
4. Sweep, then keep moving toward his head, tight grip on his leg with my legs, then kick my leg free, then put knee into his hip, keeping my butt low. Cross face with left hand for the Side Control.

II. w/ Underhook - the other direction.

III. Deep Half Sweep w/ frame.
1. My right hand prevents crossface, my left is on his shoulder across his neck preventing the underhook.
2. Dive between his legs again with my right hand, my left hand over his left thigh and link hands behind his butt.
3. Swing my hips over to the left bringing him over me and making him post his hands on the mat.
4. He should move back and into my Deep Half. Trap his top hand onto his trapped leg and turn into him for the sweep.

IV. Same but he bases and Sweep the other way.

Bonus: Omoplata Esc -- Black Chris cheekily showed a crawl under the leg escape. But the inspiring moment was when the Brown Belt was showing Black Chris a different cool Omoplata escape, and he was actually trying to learn it. He was still trying to learn at his stage in his BJJ career. He looked awkward as any White Belt trying his first move, but he tried it over and over again. Very motivating and inspiring!

The escape, by the way, was post your near leg up, shoot your arm under to roll over your shoulder and  come up in his Guard. Wished I had brought my iPad to video it.

They need to come up with a name for it, too!

Homework -- drill.
1. Closed Guard - attacks from bottom. Pendulum Sweep.
2. Closed Guard breaks (top). Scully and Lovato.
3. Tozi Pass -- how to keep him from moving? Sit on his hip.
4. Triangle ESC.

5. Loop Choke from Side. (using gi).

Review:

  • Kimura hotdog roll.
  • Ezekiel: can't quite finish.
  • X Pass. Pressure forward than step back.

Kurt O Side Attacks Breakdown

Kurt's Side Attacks from one of his seminars.

I. Side to Mount Triangle.
 1. Crossface with left hand, grab under his shoulder and pull him to me, rather than lean in; but my right hand is checking his near hip.
**2. If his right hand is up, then open up my left knee inside, toward his head and kill that arm.
 3. My right hand comes over and Knee across belly and if his left hand comes up to my knee, my right hand holds that wrist momentarily ...
 4. Right leg swings over his body, over his left hand, while I pull up his head with both hands, and swing my right foot over on the mat, getting ready to get it under his head.
 5. Get that leg under his head, grab that chin with my left hand (right is holding his head up).
 6. Lean forward down so my head is on the mat, left hand posts on the mat, lift up so I can triangle my left leg.
 7. Come back up to Mount but I have the Triangle locked in.

2* If he's tight and doesn't give near arm -- still always have Right hand checking his near hip.
3. Spread my legs out, get on my toes and get all my weight on him.
4. Then switch my hips, like a reverse Kesa, and touch my left knee to his hip, then open that knee up inside and up his armpit to kill that near arm.
5. Then the knee across belly from above ...

II. Side to Armbar
 1. from the killed near arm, knee on belly, step over his head
 2. left elbow has his near arm trapped, lean to 2 o'clock angle, and
 3. Step left leg over for the armbar.
3b. If his arm comes out, grab with both hands and normal armbar.
3c. If he muscles out and sits up, got to Triangle.

III. Knee, then Kimura.
 1. Knee across belly, right hand pins his wrist, then left hand comes over his head, under his arm to lock in Kimura grip, sit back, legs flat.
 2. Roll my stomach down, get him up to get my left leg to step over his head, right leg, toes on mat posted.
 3. Finish, push his hand toward my left hand (7 o'clock).

IV. Kesa, armbar.
1. Near arm killed, right hand over on other side with the underhook, but his hip is checked with my right knee.
2. Switch to Kesa, near arm trapped. My left arm goes under his left elbow, touch his chest.
3. Right knee, folded, touching his head, lean forward and step left leg over his head, lean back to pressure with my left arm for the finish.
3b. Far arm Armbar -- cup behind his far arm elbow, shave his face, get him on his side, step over his head with left leg, left knee up.
4. Swivel, sit down for the normal armbar. Grab his leg for extra security.

V. Kesa, Trap arm for Beatdown.
1. Push his near arm down between my legs for Beatdown or armbar.

VI. Gable choke.

VII. North-South choke.
1. My left hand on other side of his head (not crossface), and he gets is near arm free, and tucked in.
2. My right hand on his hip checked, my left hand goes under his head, and I got North-South, saggggg my body down.
3. My right hand outside his arm and under his head, left arm deeep and reach as far as possible.

Taps: 757

Taps: 2. Total: 757.

Tech. DLR to Back Take.

Brown Vince showed:
1. Simple Takedown -- Same side collar grip, other hand goes to opposite foot/knee pants grip and push  with the collar grip.

2. Nasty Knee on middle/chest Pass. Where I just sit there with the knee pressure, and Pass depending which way he moves. A) He scrimps -- go to Knee Cut Pass; B) he goes flat -- get my Knee to mat on other side and go to Mount.

But it's a miserable place to be on bottom of this; you pray for the guy to move or pass or do something. Guess that's the beauty of this move.

Misc: I love it when a White Belt tries a Hagid Choke, then tries to Berimbolo me. Okay, time to YouTube some Berimbolo Counters. Purple Ivan has been doing it to me a bunch of times, which I don't mind, but I think he showed it to White Brandon -- the same who choked out Purple Chris with the Hagid.

Need to Respect and Deal with the Cross Collar Grip. Deal with it before the Pass. Before the Pass. Previously, got Guillotined by Black Joel. Today, got pushed over and then a Loop Choke.

Purple Izzy showed me his Simple Half Guard Sweep. Just grap the free leg and keep it from coming close. Then clothesline with the other hand against his face as I bridge. The free leg is the different than what Kesting says.

This and Tails Sweeps are the main ones I'm concentrating on for Half Guard. The others with the Gi wrap under their legs ... I'm not sure if it's high percentage to pull off.

Saturday, July 6, 2013

Taps: 755

Taps: 4. Total: 755.

Techs 1 - Single Leg, he defends, Sitout to Turtle Attack, Clock Choke,

Tech 2 - Open Guard Loop Choke.

Tech 3 - Collar Drag off the same Loop Choke set up.

Here is Caio's Collar Drag. He grabs the arm and kicks out the other leg. Arm Drag and Collar Drag. Have to add to toolbox.

Been tinkering, thinking: Blue Brian has a variation of the Hip Bump Sweep. He grabs a sleeve/wrist grip and pulls that as he bumps. I'm thinking I'll use that off a Failed Reverse Scissor Sweep, since I already have the sleeve grip. I just have to the same side as the Reverse Scissor Sweep, and away from my normal Hip Bump to the left.

And I need to add Flower Sweep. And drill the Reverse Scissor the other way.

Drill:

  • Hip Bump var.
  • Reverse Scissor / other way
  • Collar Drag
  • Flower Sweep.
Misc: The Purple I was partnered with got promoted to Brown. He'd been training for 10 years.

Tuesday, July 2, 2013

Taps: 751

Taps: 3. Total: 751.

Tech 1 - Side to Mount A.
1. Standard Crossface hold, ie left hand under his head, right underhook, just under his elbow.
2. Bring my right knee across his belly. If he tries to push my knee away, use my right hand, the underhook hand, lift it toward his head, taking his hand away from my knee.
3. Bring my knee to the mat, then slap my foot on the mat for Mount.

Tech 2 - Side to Mount B.
1. Standard Crossface hold, switch to Side Hold B -- left hand out from under his head, elbow tight on outside his head; right hand against his hip.
2. Get on my toes, then reverse sit, scoot back towards his head, my butt against his head.
3a.Mount: depending how he defends -- his right foot on his other knee, push his knee toward the way that foot his pointing and step over into Mount.
3b. If he keeps his knee high, then grab my own foot, and tuck it across his stomach and into Mount.

Tech 3 - Side to Back with Kimura Grip.
1. From Side, if he turns away, then underhook his top arm with my right hand.
2. My left hand is under his head and grips his hand, and the underhook hand grips my left hand in a Kimura grip.
3. My left knee tight against his butt, lift him up and get to Back and get hooks in.

Review:

1. Reverse Scissor Sweep.
2. Spinner Takedown.
3. Safada Takedown.
4. Flower Sweep.
5. Lovato Smash Pass.

Mendes Spider Pass Breakdown

Blue Brian has been really giving me problems with his Spider Guard. I have been having a hard time clearing one side of his Leg on my bicep and his sleeve grip on my same side. Time to revisit, review a Spider Pass.

Rafael Mendes Spider Guard Pass.

General tips: 1. Get off knee; 2. Don't move forward.

1. Posture: lower hips, like squat, close elbows, and step back (get him off his back, on his butt -- that lessens power of his feet.)
2. Choose a side. Example: to Left, clearing his right leg -- to clear his foot and hand grips, Circle my left hand under his leg. Then stretch, straighten my arm and grab his pants at the knee.
3. Take a step to the Right, while my right hand Drags his other leg to the left.
4. Then come Back to the Left (walk towards his hips), my left leg under both is legs. Put shoulder pressure on his top knee.
5. My left hand -- switch from pants knee to far, same side collar grip, to keep him close and flat.
6. Right hand goes under his head (cross face), grabs his gi at shoulder.
7. Move towards his head, my right knee under his arm, my elbow on top of my thigh to secure Side Control.
