Taps: 5. Total: 342.
Focus on Butterfly Guard.
1. First grip - underhook, belt grip, GET IN CLOSE and TIGHT.
2. Back, outside leg - tight against his knee.
3. Hook - under knee, crook there, and keep contact at all times.
Also, Entry from Half Guard.
1. Keep free leg high, on his shoulder.
2. Kick out with free leg, and come up and get underhook, and belt grip.
3. Scoot back, and to side to create space to get that leg in as hook.
Tip on the Machado Weave Pass.
1. Drop my shoulder down, pressure with the weave arm.
Kimura Escapes - two simple but awesome ones because he saw me getting caught in them.
1. From inside Guard or Half Guard -- Get my knee up and grab under thigh/hamstring with the trapped arm, drop my knee down.
2. From bottom Mount or S Mount -- Trapped arm grabs my other bicep (a la RNC grip), and free hand grabs his hand at the wrist. (so when he yanks, he pulls my entire body up).
a. get my knee in between his grip and push, and come up.
After Pass tip -- Drop hip down (practice on Exercise Ball); then knee in, slide back down the other way.
North/South Choke tip -- relax, drop hip and weight down, my rib against his neck; slowly get lower and down.
Half Guard Top -- first priority - FLATTEN HIM OUT, get him on his back -- not going straight down, but circle to the right.

Taps: 1. Total: 338.
Tech. 1 - Closed Guard, Figure 4 Grip Break to Arm Drag to Back.
Tech. 2 - Open Guard, De La Riva to Single Leg, or Deep Half Sweep.
Rolling: Brown Vince killed me with his Deep Half, but I'm not going to worry about it and I'm not going to focus on countering it just yet. I want to keep concentrating on the basics, maybe later on in the year I'll start exploring it.
I'm also making an effort to roll with all the tough guys, like Purple Z and Big White Jim (who everyone is afraid of because he's so strong and big), and even Aggro Blue, who goes a 110% in his rolls with everyone.
Fear. What's the worst that can happen if I roll with a tough guy? 1. Injury. 2. I tap. I need to learn how to avoid injuries by rolling slowly and using technique against overly aggressive people. And tapping? I'm not too worried about that. That's what this whole blog's about.
I don't usually talk about tapping others because it is such a race occurrence, but almost tapped a White with Marcelo's North/South Choke, but the two or three times I was able to sink it in in the past, I've always had a problem finishing, so I released it but he said I was close. I did tap Blue Edgar with a choke from the back/side when I had mount and got first hand in for the cross choke, he rolled and I was able to get his Back and still had the grip, and my other hand went under his arm and behind his head, but I think he had a hand in there defending, and was thinking about going for the armbar when he tapped.
That's it. I don't like to talk about tapping others lest it gets my ego bigger. If the tap happens, it happens.

Taps: 2. Total: 337.
Been 10 days since I last trained and it showed. I was a bit disjointed, and didn't feel like I had much timing and felt rusty.
Brown Vince taught the basic Flower Sweep. His main point was don't abandon it. When the guy inside Guard lifts his knee and you hook it and he counters by putting that knee back down and trapping your arm, most people just quit on the Flower Sweep. He said continue on and swing your leg like an armbar movement and the sweep will still work.
Second Technique: a Top Side Mount Drill -- where he shrimps, hip escapes and turns into me, I put my left arm on inside of his top arm, swing around to the other side for Side Control.
Personal Bonus from Vince: Grip fight and grip break.

Taps: 10. Total: 335.
Awesome training. There was Brown Shark Mike, Purple Reyn, Purple Jordan, Purple Z, Blue Dan and me. Must make it a rule:
Rule 1: Try to train with higher belts.
It makes me feel like a White belt. Beginner's mind, no mind. Empty cup. Plus, the ego is taken away because I'm not too worried about tapping because I'm supposed to tap and I'm seeing if I know anything to prolong the inevitable for a few seconds longer.
Also, love the position drills. Mount/Escape Mount; Back attacks/Escape; Guard/Pass Guard. No new techniques, just working on what we know at the moment. Just showed how many holes I have. I kinda know a few things, but not very well.

The $58 Roll
Taps: 1. Total: 325.
I think Coach Chris is still sick. Black Joel taught. Not so much techniques but he talked principles and showed some techniques that expanded on those principles. Very cool. He talked about "feeling" what so opponent was about to do and being ready to respond, so that you will always be "one step ahead." -- ie. he has a hand on your wrist, you "know" he's going for a Kimura; he upas to the side, you know he's going to elbow escape, so you go S mount, etc.
Then he showed a armbar from S Mount, and Low Mount when he tries to put you into Half Guard, you swim under both hands and S/Triangle Mount, trapping both hands and go for armbar. Brown Vince tweaked it by saying to lean downward and putting more pressure and coming down at an angle for the armbar that was much much tighter.
Had to park in the meters in front of the academy, and I had 10 minutes on the meter when Blue Brian (who was promoted at the same time as me) asked me to roll. Super nice guy. We rolled for 15 minutes, very back and forth, I missed on a sloppy and fast collar choke, he almost got me in an armbar but I've been working on the escape and he went slowly and wasn't quite there with his grip break so I had half a second to roll into him and I was able to pull my arm out and we stopped. I ran out to feed the meter and there was the meter maid giving me a ticket. I said I was over by three minutes. No mercy or sympathy from the meter maid. She said she already wrote up the ticket. Was she standing there waiting for meter to tick over?
So that last roll cost me $58. I should have put in the extra 50 cents from the beginning. Oh well. I should be more upset. Maybe Mark over at the Tap or Die blog is right. JJ makes us calmer. Although I'm still working on being patient with my four-year old.

Taps: 1. Total: 324.
No techniques but just went over general Open Guard principles: Open from Closed Guard on my terms; don't float my arms in the air, have a grip either on collar or sleeve; break his grips on my pants/knees in Open Guard; my feet needs contact on him, either on his hips or biceps; if he circles connect my leg on that lip and circle with him.
Tapped to White Gilles. Again. He's three stripes and getting better, but S@#$%. Suckit it to the Hell, man.
Need to Review: Arm bar Escapes. Arm bar Escapes. Arm bar Escapes.

Taps: 4. Total: 323.
Open mat with just Blue Dan and me. He got me twice with a Kimura Sweep from Half Guard Bottom. I defended the Kimura and even based out with the other hand but he still got the sweep. I realized that I needed to either pull my hand back and I was not flattening him out by circling my trapped leg to the right.
Also, he got me twice with an Side Armbar. And he showed me an armbar escape that goes in the other direction as the Hitchhiker. I need to power my legs and come up quick onto my knees.
He's also gotten really good with his Butterfly Sweeps. I need to YouTube that shit and Nullify his Butterfly. YouTube Butterfly Passes.
I also tried this Omoplata escape. But I didn't Gable grip and I didn't sit out, and so I did end up turning him but I ended up in bottom Side Control. Had to laugh at myself.
