1. I watch vids a few times.
2. I memorize the steps.
3. I try them in class in live sparring.
** It's hit and miss. It works sometimes or not.
Usually it doesn't work because I can't remember a key step or the last two steps of the technique. Then I go back and re-watch the vid and try again.
But the reason I can't remember is because I HAVE NOT DRILLED IT. Repeat. I have NOT drilled it.
If I drill it enough, I don't have to remember it. It's Muscle Memory. So I don't think and let my muscles do the work.
Brown Mike says if you understand the Position, then the techniques will come. (Too Yoda for me. Maybe someday I'll get there.)
Brown Vince says reverse engineer it. Think of the counter. What he can do to stop it. I stop that and I'll remember my next move.
Things to think about as I break down Rolle's Standing Pass. I like the Guard Break, too. I'm going to re-visit this, then go to Saulo Paulo/Lovato Smash or X Pass, to Leg Drag. Cycle through til I get the Pass.
Here's the steps.
1. My left hand forward (on his chest), right hand back, elbow inside his thigh. Posture.
2. Move to left (direction of my lead hand) to create an angle.
3. Left leg up near his hip.
4. Back, right leg on toes, swivel and come up. Not half up, not completely standing.
5. That opens guard. Right hand on his left knee, pushes down, staples to mat and get my right knee on top of his knee/thigh.
6. As he tries to push my knee off, get his sleeve with my right hand.
7. Left hand goes Under the right leg (which is on my shoulder), switch sleeve grip control over from right to left.
8a. The Pass. To right. Lean forward and go over his trapped knee.
8b. To Left. Lean forward, cross face, backstep my right leg.
